as in using calipers designed to work on the front of a car? How does your handbrake work?

no they are rear calipers just sit infront of the rear wheel rather than behind and just need to make a bracket for handbrake atm then its done :)

Its not ideal but you can still bleed them. But I'm still wondering why you would want to do this

nah the nipple is in the middle where it sits normally near enough and if you check my build thread with the carrier adapters the nipple actually sits higher than standard so probably easier to bleed.

and hayesey i want to do this as i want rear disc brakes and due to my stub axle forward plates (check my build thread) i cannot fit the calipers at the rear of the wheel as the stub axle to carrier bolt mounting locations sit against the plate. so i have modified it to sit at the front with a lot of effort and alot of high end sports cars have the rear calipers at the front of the rear wheel. Audi RS4 to name one

a mate once fitted some callipers for me and no matter how many times we bleed them we couldn't get all the air out of them, it took me a week to figure out he'd put them on the wrong way around

so what makes you wont to put discs on the back? what brakes you got on the front? what are your calapers off?

i am about to fit mk1 golf gti front calipers with vented discs to the front when i do my afh conversion over the next 3-4 weeks and why not fit rear discs doesnt have to be a reason if someone just wants to. and i want to stop with all the new power il be putting in the engine bay as I'm tripling the horse power of the car near enough.

hope you are going to put a brake bias valve in coss you will find your back end will try to over take you in hard braking..

i agree with this comment...

the brake piston is above the bleed nipple so it can make them tricky to bleed.. i but if you use a pressure bleeder you should be ok

I can vouch for this one.

I fitted 256mm front discs and 226mm rear discs to a MK1 without a bias valve and had some (very) scary moments.

Use the Scirocco inline valves. Much easier to fit and were used by VW on the 16v Scirocco with rear discs.

^^^didnt know you could use those. just thrown some out :( they were full of crud ddo.

Shopping time me thinks.

are they actually fitted one on each caliper? they were just sitting in the box or rear disc parts I had lying around, but there were 6 of them.

normal drums are perfectly upto the job. Your just going to be swapping ends with disks imo

Should be alright if you bias them down.

For me, never having to change another VW set of brakes shoes sells it totally. They are one of the worst brakes designs ever from a servicing point of view.
