My 6n2 2001 Polo TDI went for its MOT this week and I got

an advisory for "Front Sub-frame corroded But Not Seriously Weakened".

I have had a look under and its pretty much covered in surface rust .

Wondered If its worth doing anything about it to slow the rust down like

wirebrush it and paint it with something like krust or por15.

I don't have the tools or the ability to take the whole thing off to fully

treat it so could only do the accessible parts.

Or do I just leave it and wait till it fails its MOT and in the meantime source a decent looking one from Ebay and then pay labour for the replacement.

id saygetrid of the rust ,treat it and spray it

will more then likely save you money in the long run

Slap a load of underseal on it. In the meantime, cover it in old engine oil to stop the air/water making things worse

take it off, Wire brush it / knot wheel it, primer it, and gloss black it to seal it. then coat it in underseal.

It'll look brand spankers.

just make sure its got no holes that it shouldnt have.

I am no great lover of underseal, as I find that it is as good at sealing moisture IN as it is at keeping it out, also, once you have sprayed oil on it, you would have great difficulty getting any paint to stick at a later date.

My advice would be to wire brush it (wear safety goggles) and rub as much of the rust away as you can with coarse sand-paper, 'wet-or-dry' or emery cloth and then give it a couple of coats of good quality metal primer, followed by any old oil-bound paint that you may have around the house.

Alternatively, you could use Hammerite undercoat, followed by normal Hammerite.

Thanks guys going to do what I can with it in situ wont be taking it off

as isn't the engine attached to it along with the rest of suspension

Will clean it up best I can and then prime/paint it, if it goes a few more years before it fails then

guess its worth the work.
