I'm a DJ/producer, and i love it

Got a part-time job while i was at college at the local bike shop at 15, broke my leg pretty bad so had to give it up. Then went to work in a factory, 12 hour shifts doing monkey work, hated it so much a quit after a month and my leg kept playing up. Saw an add in the window of bakers oven (now greggs) for a trainee baker so applied out of desperation, got the job and never looked back, i love it

I quite like what i do lol, i got a multiskilled apprenticeship with shell uk at there stanlow refinary when i was 17 with only 4 GCSE's lol I'm now 18 and still in the apprenticeship just about to start my proper work on site :)

I'm a University student at Warwick studying Mechanical Engineering with Automotive Engineering... also work in retail at a big name supermarket flitting between checkouts and shopfloor...

I'm 20 and in my third year (penultimate year of my degree) and have never been busier, it's been really good to get more into the work and finally after 2 years of utter pointless bollocks start doing some project work that actually interests me. I'm a member of the Formula Student team who'll be building a car for next year, this year we're working on a class 2 entry (just a design exercise) and looking to go electric for the first time at our Uni, exciting stuff! Alongside that I'm also working on an electric go-kart to compete in the Electric Vehicle Grand Prix at Indianapolis - http://www.evgrandprix.org/ I believe we're one of the only UK Universities going, Coventry are one of the others so some good friendly competition there, think we all know who's going to do best though!

The part time jobs a bit of an arse but it keeps me afloat, most of the guys there are pretty sound too.. running a sub 25MPG possibly isn't the smartest of moves and I guess my outgoings are probably higher than your average student, but I have no idea how so many people manage to survive without a job, let alone afford the Macbook Pros and iPhone 4s. I'm struggling on a 12 hour job, was doing 23 hours before Christmas which was brilliant money wise but really couldn't do that and then work on assignments when I got home.

Absolutely no idea what I'll be doing after I graduate.. watch this space I guess

Left school and couldn't get a job straight away, first job was as a chrismas temp working for royal mail finished there and couldnt get a job for 3 years (my god how i hated that time, and the jobcentre) then got a job with Autobar Vending good job, was great getting to drive a Citreon Relay (last time i'd drove was about 2 1/2 years previously in a mk2 bready) - didn't tell the guy that at first did that for 6 months until my contract with the agency ended :( nothing for a year then got another vending job, this time with Selecta - again was great fun, only me in the van, loved it for 6 months then they wanted rid of me (last in, first out) so decided id go to college and do a course in car maintenence. Started that and about a month or so after I got a call for an interview with a job I never thought i'd get :)

Travelled an hour to get there, thought it went ok then forgot about it got a call saying I didn't get the job i'd applied for, but would I be interested in another one, I said yes! so for the past 6 months i've been working in the post room of the head office of Wolseley UK

Great fun, and i'll be moving closer soon (i hope) so no more £80 a week petrol costs

I'm an apprentice at bentley, busy learning all the trades - sparky, trimmer, sprayer, engineer etc. And il be placed in a section in nov this year and should be qualified in 3 years. Although first year apprentice wage is shite i love it :)

work as a hospital porter shite job have had a fair few jobs but I'm now looking for something better closer to home if not ill be looking into a course to do something better

I'm an apprentice at vauxhall, absolutly love it, the best thing about it is the banter! Although somtimes i get home and cant be botherd to work on my car. The pay is the worst thing baout it, but that can only get better!

Psychology/Sociology Graduate (BSc) currently working as a Business Administrator for a MNC called Tarmac. I'm itching to change roles and get into the Operations function of the business so i'm learning a lot, worked on a good project last year and all is good currently.

Work one evening a week as a barman - same job as when I was a student.

Left home when I joined the Marines, did 15 years in various places. Got married while I was in and found out the family came first. Went to work offshore in the North Sea and am still at it only now20 years leter, working abroad as an expat and living in Spain (Tax Free) Love my job, on semi sub floating drilling rigs, senior ballast control, keep the thing level and the right way up!

Most of the time when everything is working right, it's just a babysitting job but we got to know which are the right buttons to push when things go wrong, otherwise plenty of surfing time, that t'internet surfing by the way.LOL

I work month on month off so it gives me time to get stuff done providing I'm not enjoying the sun and sea too much.

Automotive Engineer, currently a Principal Engineer in the Electrical Dept at Tata Motors (owners of Jaguar Land Rover). Spent 5 years previous working at automotive consultants Ricardo.

It's not all roses, but has its moments - I've got to travel a fair bit for hot and cold test trips, and to places like the Geneva Motor Show as well as various different test facilities. On the other hand, trying to fix a car you've broken on cold test when its -37°C outside isn't such fun - neither is working all hours to commission cars just before major shows or media events.

Andy, i see you're based in Leam and work for Tata.. Do you work in the IARC?

I only ask because in the topic about electric vehicles you mentioned a car you'd been testing.. I don't suppose this was the same one that has been shown on Warwick Campus a fair amount lately? Keep seeing it outside the IMC!

I have a Bsc in Geology with environmental sciences.

Spent a year working for a financial investments company to save up and pay for car, license, insurance etc...

Then finally got the kind of job i wanted. Environmental engineer- only catch was it was in Sudan. Left after a couple months as it was getting a bit sketch out there at the time.

Started working as a environmental monitoring technician at 2 waste-energy sites in Buckinghamshire. Now been there over two years and after the first year I became site manager. Getting some courses and plant tickets under my belt and who knows...

Pretty happy at the moment, get to rag the defender about off road all day and is good place to work during the summer....

I only ask because in the topic about electric vehicles you mentioned a car you'd been testing.. I don't suppose this was the same one that has been shown on Warwick Campus a fair amount lately? Keep seeing it outside the IMC!

Yep, I'm in there on the 3rd floor. There was talk of us moving out as we're getting a bit fed up of lack of facilities, but I think WMG and the university are sorting things out with Tata now.

There are quite a few of the cars knocking around on campus - the cars from the first trial fleet are now with customers. It's amusing seeing how many hungover students jump a mile when they fail to look properly and just step out into the road because they can't hear anything coming!

Well i left school and then went straight to college where i did a BTEC National Diploma in Manufacturing Engineers (welding machining, CNC programming, CAD/CAM), then went to Uni studying BSc in CAD (Mechanical), i worked at a local hotel while at uni, i loved working there awesome banter and rather nice ladies i worked with too. I graduated in 2008 couldnt find a job, so got desperate and took a job in Morrisons Cafe, it was the worst job in the world, i was soul destroying working with retards, with no ambition!

Then i was reading the local paper and noticed an article about a local engineering company that were on the up and doing really well. So i sent in my CV and got an interview, they gave me a job as a graduate engineer. I'm working my way round the different departments, I'm currently in the design office designing fine screening systems for sewage works. its a grim industry but people are always going to need their shit cleaning up! I get to go out on site quite often to asses sites for retrofits. And site surveys for new installations.

Oh and the MD of my work got all us graduates together and said because we are all into our cars, he will give use some cash to form a racing team. and we plan on entering hillclimbs and sprints! cant wait to get the car built, just a shame its a shitty 1.4 Puma (Pooma)

I've been a sewing machinist sincec i left school. made everything you could think of. spent 10 years making clothes and underwear. then spent 4 years as an upholstery machinist making settees etc. then went onto car upholstery.

Tis a small world indeed! I seem to be spending most of my time in the IMC lately and have ventured over to the IARC when I've needed something RP'd..

I can relate to that, the little van thing (elvin?) has caught me out a few times! I remember reading about a WMG project exploring the ways to make EVs audible and how they should sound. Not sure if this was linked to yourselves or something different though. I'm guessing you don't drive the polo to work? I'm sure I would have noticed it around!

Started my work career in retail, B&Q of all places. Worked up from checkout operator to cash office clerk, as the stupidity of the general public got on my tits, and I prefered a role that was less 'forward-facing'. Was a great store to work for with the banter that was forever going on and made some great friends out of it, some of which I still remain in touch with. However, retail was never what I wanted to be in, it was more a case of I didn't know what I wanted to do with myself, and had bills to pay, so a part-time job quickly became a full-time job.

When I moved to Derby from Southport, I used B&Q as a stepping-stone so I could get myself sorted down there. The store I tranferred to was hell, and convinced me I was definitely working in the wrong place. Staff cuts, and staff having to take on an increasing amount of roles and work, whilst being moaned at for not being able to complete tasks (due to having to do other roles) really made it a nightmare job. That ended 5 and a half years working for them!

I left there and went looking for something that paid better, offered more hours and was easy to get into, so ended up becoming a merchandiser, as, well I was already largely familiar with it. It was better than the job at B&Q Derby, but paying to live in a house you only saw for 8 days a month and working what was essentially 6 days a week grew less appealing. I was made redundant due to lack of work in December '08. Great Xmas present that was...

A fruitless search for any and every job going left me frustrated. I got offered 2 days a week working for the merchandising company in February '09 and took that as it was about the best offer I'd had so far. Then out of the blue came a phone call from a mate I'd known through this forum asking if I was satill job-hunting and did I fancy a job at his place (a bodyshop) as a valeter.

I started at my current job as a result of that phone call in March '09 and worked as a valeter/driver up until October of that year, when a vacancy came up for parts manager. I jumped at the chance and have done that role ever since. I love the job, though, thats not to say it doesnt have its moments. For example when a cars been with us ages because a parts on back-order, or parts become difficult to source for a car, and then I have various managers on my case, as of course, they have insurance companies on theirs!

I've learnt a lot about bodywork working there, and carry out a few roles as and when opportunies arise. I still do driving (collecting and dropping off cars for repair) and I also help strip and refit cars. Even get busy with the filler when I'm particularly quiet in parts. I've just got to learn to weld now .

You'd have got used to it..... and probably have ended up as nuts as all the rest of us that do it for a living.

Five years, about 200,000 miles, probably ssomething close to 15 resignations, 3 sackings, the odd psychotic episode, many bizarre, surreal and totally inexplicable experiences later, I still love this job
