Hi there just a quickey do your rear lights have to be a certain colour? Say for xample i sprayed my rear lights white... But u can still see when i brake etc is it illegal?

Like a lot of the regulations for lighting this falls into a grey area! as long as the required lights emit a definate colour ie red for the brake/side/fog and not a washed out pink! and orange for the ind's you should be OK but it all depends on the MOT tester/VOSA/plod definition of red/orange, and there is no official definition of red/orange in the lighting reg's!! The only definate thing is you MUST show a RED reflective to the rear and that would be difficult if the whole of the light unit was painted white!

If you google "UK vehicle lighting regulations" you will find all the regulations regarding lighting, and like most government/legal publications they are a nightmare too read and interpritate! you might find that you can have the reflective red in an area other that the light cluster, from memory it has to be within so many mm's from the outside edge of the vehicle and so many mm's above the road surface, so you might legally get away with a reflective red sticker on the bumper?

I've been pulled for having the rear fog on, when the conditions were Ok, got away with it as I'd just come off the M62 and it was 20yds vis in places before the junction, and a previous car (Mk3 Fiesta) failed it's MOT for ind's not being orange enough!! (they were standard light units and correct bulbs fitted!!)

Amber and Red are the only legal colours, Its illegal to display a white light to the rear (with reverse (still illegal if its jammed on) and number plate).

You can have the lenses any colour you want as long as the reflector is visable and the light produced by the bulbs is viewed as Amber or Red.

You can get pulled if the light are not visible enough but its down to the individual copper.
