Hey ! I have a small problem with my 97 6N.

Every time I LET GO of the break pedal, theres a really annoying squeek sound, like an old bike's brakes. Like something isn't lubricated in there.

The breaks function well, it's just irritating and makes me sound like a truck on a quiet street or a traffic jam.

*I am talking about the 2 rear drum breaks

I am headed to the parts store, what stuff should I get for the repair ?

I've the same thing with mine, although with mine it's whenever there is play in the pedal, on and off, although it doesn't do it when handbrake is applied. I put this down to moving parts inside the drums. A common problem I'm told.

my old 6n used to do it, need to put some copper grease (anti seize compound) on the backs of the pads

Hmm where do i get that grease ? can this be done at home with a jack ?

So I pull out the rear tire and the drum is in front of me, what part exactly do i grease ? could you find a drun picture and tell me ? i really appreciate the help

oh i missed the drum bit u wrote, mine was doing it on the front, on the pads, thats where i put the compound, have to do that when u put new break pads in else it starts making that horrible noise lol

OK basically the biggest job I am comfortable doing/paying for for this problem is greasing the drum parts.

Could anyone tell me which parts need greasing, and if I need to remove the entire thing or just the wheel ?

remove the drum and inspect the shoes for thickness of braking surface and contamination. there should be at least a couple of mm all the way down the shoe and zero contamination.

check the wheel cylinder for leakage, there should be none and the pistons should freely move in and out.

make sure the handbrake lever moves freely, if it doesn't then you may need to strip the whole lot out and lube or replace them.

if it's realy poopy in there then lever the botton of the shoes over the stop, remove the bottom spring and the pivots half way up the shoe. Let the shoes fall forward and clean the backing plate thorougly with a wire brush.

Apply a smear of copperslip to the points you can see the shoes touch the backing plate and put it all back together.

Do one side at a time so if it goes wrong you can use the other side as a reference.

this is all really easy to do, grab some tools and a haynes manual and crack on!
