Just had to change a 1.0 mpi engine on a polo 6n2, only the doner engine has this black canister thing on it ,where as the original hadn't..

I need to find out where the little black pipe goes too....

Seems to be the EGR valve if I'm not mistaken,my AEX doesn't have tough.

Sure, suspend it as your ECU wasn't designed to cope with it altough there may be some other differences between these two engines

.EGR mainly deals with pollution by reducing the NOx and second a bit with fuel consuption alowing runing slightly lean .
