1982 Polo Gl 1.4 16v

Featured Replies

Hi mate, forgive me if I'm preaching the obvious.

The firing order you said is correct.

When i did my conversion i put the engine to TDC, then manually tried to line up the rotor arm with the dizzy cap connected to piston 1.

After checking the spark and fuel this should set you up on a basic enough setting to at least get it firing.

Good Luck!

cheers for the reply bro, thats exactly what i did but still all that happens is a lot of backfire through the carbs mainly and every now and then the exhaust.. will try again tomorrow i think :)

Hmmm. In theory these are so simple there cant really be that much else!

Fuel - Air - Spark and it should do something!

I see you T-pieced a facet pump and deffo getting fuel through yeah?

Have you checked the spark by whipping a plug out and physically seeing it?

My next guess would be its not a strong enough spark to get it going. the timing wont be perfect so will need all the other parts of it to be spot on to compensate.

If you have got all that fine then try twisting the dizzy a bit, try again and then repeat untill you see some improvement!

You dont sound too far off though... mine was similar on the first startup. Didnt really want to fire up and i had to crank it over for a fair while before i got any result.

It deffo didnt start on the button and then drive off into the sunset!

Yes It is getting a spark etc, I will check all of the fuel lines later as well.. I have also been doing some research and found that because my polo is early it has a white and purple resistive wire which lowers the coil voltage to 9volts eater than 12v... So I am going to do te mod for this and see if that helps.. It can be found in the FAQ engine section if you fancy a read :) I will let you know how it goes though! Cheers mate :)

she runs!! video to come soon :)

the reasons for it not starting was due to a number of things.. timing was way out.. fuel lines the wrong way.. removed the resistive purple and white wire and replaced it with a new one so the coil would get all 12v rather than 9v..

just got a few things left to do:

Service

Attach throttle cable to pedal

attache choke cable properly

gearbox oil

battery in boot

fix fuel pump, coil in place

general tidy up

future plans:

Bigger wheels prefer 14's but wouldnt mind test fitting a set of G60 steels..

respray?

retrim?

who knows.. already got a spare valver for when this one goes bang :)

Faaak, thats a standard exhaust? with no CAT right?

Thats the sound i've been to replicate with all different types of silencer combo's

AFH exhuast note FTW!

cheers max yeh totaly standard exhaust so no cat on the 1982 model :)

Epic dude, i suppose it is 1400cc and ~125bhp breathing through it now so its bound to sound different.

Sounds like a beast! That exhaust has got to be restrictive though. I'd consider a bigger bore on that

I'm using a standard exhaust too, between about 3k and 5k its rediculously raspy!!

haven't noticed any difference in power going from my upswept exhaust to standard either.

Being upswept wouldnt make a difference anyway, unless it had a larger bore. And stainless doesn't affect the power either, despite what mant seem to think
