basically set fire to my car last night by accident.. after the fire brigade had been and put my engine bay fire out i closed my bonnet.. and now the pop from inside the car isnt working, as far as i can tell the cable isnt broke..

how can i get under the bonnet to start to repair it ?

depending on the car, some times you can jack the car up and force your hind right up and pull on the cable to release the bonnet, or the other way is to rip the front grill off, (is there is anything left of it in your case) and then you will be able to work it out from there.

Hard luck on the fire how did it happen.

iv got my front grill off but still cant really see the mechanism or anything.. i dont have a jack low enough to get under my car either :(

will have to wait until my mate finishs work to get his jack..

was changing my plugs and my throttle body (the single point injection bit in the throttle body) had sprayed petrol on the inside of my airbox.. had just got a new seal to replace it from the scrap yard and was going to put it in when i put it all back together ....

and when i took the last plug out the ht lead dropped on the rocker cover and sparked and well there was a big flame.. a fire engine.. and yer not good :( should of really took the battery off but because I'm a tool i didnt and just took the keys out the ignition ..

How does ht lead spark on to plastic airbox when the ignition is off, how much petrol was in the dam airbox for you to need the fire brigade?

I managed to set the interior of my scirocco on fire once and needed the fire brigade but I was doing some thing much stupider than changing spark plugs, I even managed to turn myself into a fire ball while trying to put it out... drop and roll!

There was alot of petrol... Everything inside my airbox was soaked in petrol..

The air filter and airbox cover were ontop of the battery and they caught fire aswell...

Should of disconnected the battery but owell... Only one way too learn :)

Were you changing the plugs while the engine was running? There shouldn't be any spark at the lead unless it is.

you plan to rebuild this car after creating an accident that caused fire, not being able to sus out a bonnet catch (with the grill off), and then angle grinding the bonnet to sort it with no sign of any safety gear or precaution.

think I'll be taking a wide berth round this one if it ever goes again. Bicycles might be a better place to go from here?

I don't get it, unless the ignition was on there shouldn't be any charge in the HT leads as there is no power to the coil?

Anyways, i agree with everyone else, angle grinder to the bonnet just from one catch is a bit drastic!!!

tbh I've done alot worse too....

what do you do when your throttle cable snaps 2 miles from home? let just say speaker wires came in handy

When ever I work on the engine/electrics I ALWAYS disconnect negative lead on battery before I even look at anything else. It's called safety!
