Hi, Cut a long story short.

When I'm driving, the car tends to cut out and the battery light comes up and all dials just fail apart from only the speedo. When the car cuts out at a higher speed such as 20mph+, the oil light flashes and all the dials stop, again apart from only the speedo until i slow down to about 5mph then the battery lights comes on. This sometimes happens when I'm barely moving going 2mph. Sometimes the car judders before it happens.

Its weird because when it happens, the car is still working meaning i can still rev the car and speed up and also the brakes work fine.

I put the car on VAGCOM and this is what is showed up which I think is something to do with the problem:

** 1 Fault Found:

00513 - Engine Speed Sensor (G28)

03-10 - No Signal - Intermittent

Readiness: N/A **

The car is a Polo 6n2 1.4 16v with 77000 on the clock.

The person who sold me the car said it isn't the crank sensor because he has changed that.

Any help on this would be much appreciated please.

My wife has a Polo, same spec as Dannys and is having the exact same issues and the same code on a vagcom scan too....

Hi, i still haven't got this sorted and nope, no one on this forum has helped. After reading up on a few things, i reckon it could be the battery or the wiring leading to the sensor.. have a look at this tread, it might help you.....

Quick update, changed the camshaft sensor on the car the other day, scanned it, was clear, then the next day the same thing started happening, just scanned it now and the same fault has come up again!!!

Anyone offer anymore advice on this at all please???

it's the crank sensor...try fitting another one of those and re-scan it after a run...

Thanks Dubbprince, do you know where this is located on a 6n2 and is it a big job or a DIY.

I'm told you have to take off the starter motor to get to it, well thats on a gti but would think its the same on all 6n2's,

It should be located around the opening where the starter motor bolts on and engages the flywheel.

You need to support the car on axle stands, get underneith with the battery disconnected and unbolt the starter motor (3x 13mm bolts/nuts) you can access at least 2 from the top of the bay by moving the plastic wire conduit away from the side of the engine...it sits on two of the starter bolts.

Then using the same 13mm spanner or socket undo the power cable and unclip the connector on the starter to remove the starter.

Once undone- you will see a thick (5mm thick) black cable coming out of the join where the gearbox meets the engine...this sensor is held in with an allen type bolt- possibly 3-4mm.

The connector for this sensor can be traced to where the plastic conduit runs...just un do the plug there with a small flat head and away you go...

be careful removing the allen bolt holding the sensor in- they are sometime very tough to get off and can round off...so ensure you place your tool in properly. :-)

a qaulified techy would most likely measure the resistence on the sensor before removing it, this would ensure it was definately the sensor at fault.

I'm sure it wont cost you a lot if you can find out if the speed sensors on these are pretty much the same part number! then get to a scrappy and practice removing it on another car?
