I've recently got a breadvan that I've been working on getting running again, when I get it ready how id like to take it to my MOT station over in lewisham whats about 5 miles away, its pretty grim for driving so id rather not get towed there as that could be alot of hassle

whats the laws on driving a car without MOT? Can I insure a car without an MOT? I'm sure I heard somewhere that they can be driven as long as it is to the MOT station, the veichle also doesnt have tax.

any help much appretiated!

I had this with my old Punto it was insured but had no MOT or tax so i assumed i could drive it straight to the MOT station but i was wrong when i asked the garage about the legalities of it all and it was the same with another garage i asked so my question was how on earth could i get it to the station? and the answer was trailer or the garage comes out to your address and picks it up .

I suppose in the past many people have been pulled up and rang an MOT station to book then drove around with no intention of taking it there who knows ???

The garage were talking shite then. As has already been said, it's legal to drive a car to a pre-booked MOT appointment as long as it's insured - it doesn't have to be taxed.

just to add i got pulled other day for driving with no mot. i was on my way to the mot test though and had it booked in, everything ok :)

Just remember that the car has to be road worthy in the eyes of the police too. If they believe that it's breaking the law in anyway, apart from the lack of MOT and tax, then expect the worst.

It is generally an offence to use on a public road , a vehicle of testable age that does not have a current test certificate, except when:

Taking it to a test station for a test BOOKED IN ADVANCE.

Bringing it away from a test station after it has failed the test, TO A PLACE OF REPAIR.

Taking it to or bringing it away from a place where by PREVIOUS ARRANGEMENT repairs are to be , or have been , made to remedy the defects for which the vehicle was failed.

EVEN IN THE ABOVE CIRCUMSTANCES you may still be prosecuted for driving an unworthy vehicle if it does not comply with various Regulations affecting its construction and use . Additionally the insurance may not be valid.

one thing to watch out for though, if you pass the MOT then it's technically NOT legal drive drive it home with no tax. So really you need to be able to walk or get a lift to a post office near the MOT garage. bit stupid really!

i used that method to scrap a 7.5t wagon booked a mot and drove it 20 miles to the scrap yard which was helpfully on the route to the mot station. canceled the appointment and lost the tenner deposit. but saved more than 200 :-D

as said, perfectly legal to do. did it with a saxo i was looking to buy, lucky it didnt even get on the RR as it was too low, drove shite lol
