hi

my mk 2 1.0 4 speed as a whinnning second gear and it clunks most of the time when changing first to second unless I'm very slow with the change

iv changed to oil will no change, if i double clutch to stop the clunk can i stop the whinning getting any worsa and save my box?

also it generally doesnt happen when changing down to second, not sure why tho

nothing much you do , fresh oil should keep it going best it can

they're pretty cheap to get 2nd hand , just keep an eye out for another box

impossible to answer that really. Maybe ten minutes, maybe ten years. But if it's definitely got enough oil in it now then I'd expect it to not get much worse too quickly but this depends how bad it is to start with! The damage that has been done cannot repair itself, no kind of gearbox oil can put metal back onto a synchromesh or gear teeth.

For piece of mind I'd swap the box, you can probably get an 084 box for free if you ask around! Or upgrade to an 085 (i.e. 5 speed) for £50 (although I've had these for free in the past too)

yeah if its full of oil id not panic , they do seem to plod on

just keep an eye out for another box , get a clutch off ebay for peanuts too if you shop around
