Fitted some vw2 calipers to my coupe yesterday and my wheels wont fit over them, could i grind away about 3-5mm of material from where it says germany above vwII and where the little number 2 is without any major issues, or is it best just to space em out?

13" wellers, its not the size thats the issue, its the fact that they are a pretty flat face and dont clear the front of the caliper :(

Know people that have just ground the calliper away.

It wont effect the brakes in any way or how effective they are (providing you dont grind too much off :p ).

Only thing is if you dont do a neat job of it, will look fucking awful!

personally... I wouldn't. Taking that much material away could really weaken the calliper and worse case senario is that the calliper could break under heavy/hard braking.

I ground my 6N2 GTi rear calipers to get my 13" steels over them, ran them like that for ages and they were fine. Just be sensible, all I removed was some of the fin like sections, don't go taking too much off, tidy it up with a dremel and repaint and it can look factory

They ended up going in the bin when I broke the car though - I was confident enough in my own workmanship to run them but wouldn't risk trying to sell them

Come on dude, grinding material off a caliper? Just spelling out pikey ,Maybe if its a just the surface but not 3-5mm.

Wonder how it would get on at MOT time if the tester noticed, after all , the caliper will be comprimised and be as good as "damaged"

There's no reason to grind away at the caliper when simple wheel spacers are so cheap. I ran a set of grayston spacers with longer bolts for a while, worked a treat and were only about £15 iirc

I'll admit 3-5mm is a lot though, didn't see that in the first post at first. I took no where near that off mine, must've been <1mm and it was a diameter interference rather than the face. So for this situation spacers would be the better option.

I've ordered some 7mm ones and ill probs get some 5mm ones on the way home this evening, the issue was that iv'e already got about 20mm of poke!

Dude, my rear arches are a fucking abortion I've been debating going a scrappy and getting some rears and weld them on to make em wider then doing the same with my fronts

I ground mine, haven't had any issues.

I used spacers as well, but when I put new brake pads and discs in and it expanded the caliper I couldn't get the wheel on afterwards. I repainted the whole caliper and you can't even notice it now.

We make the ceramic brake calipers for Bentley and Audi at work, and the tolerances on the castings are pretty big, so I would imagine it wouldn't be too bad to the integrity of the caliper if you ground some away, not too much mind.

I think you have already answered the question, by the fact that you had to ask it in the first place - if you get what I'm saying. Its obviously not safe but you just wanted to find some people who have already done it to assure you. The calipers are that shape, size and thickness for a reason.

That is pretty much exactly why i asked, and frankly if you were having a go, i wouldn't have taken offense

On the upside, i bought some 5mm spacers on the way home from work and they worked. JUST!

We once experimented at work with grinding calipers down. You can take about 2.5mm off and be safe but any more and you can see the caliper body start to flex.
