Hey all.

I'm 19 currently, and kind of bored driving around in my 1.4 polo, a lot of my friends have got new cars or nice things (focus rs's etc) and they're only young as we all have quite a good income for young people.

But anyway, just wondering what peoples opinions are of the older audi s3's (98-02 ish) id want a 225 one so i assume thats the BAM engine, although i might look at a quattro sport with an AGU engine as they're meant to be a better foundation for playing with.

has anyone actually insured a car like this at 19 with 2 years no claims?

i just did a quote as if to say i was a year older, with 3 years no claims (eg when my renewal is) and can insure a 225 with wheels, coilovers, exhaust, induction and a remap for like £3400, i know this is loads but i expect that.

just generally looking for some tips/info, and before anyone says i will NOT be insuring it in my parents names or any bending the rules like that!

Get yourself a derv and have a play with that, easy to tune and great as a NCB builder I looked at A3 TDI Sports when buying my golf, they're good cars :)

£3,400 is your insurance company telling you they don't want to insure you.

Sorry to be a killjoy but that's a retarded amount of money to spend on insurance.

JM2P of course. Just think what you'll be able to buy with the cash you save running around in the Polo for now.

Someone's always going to have a newer, faster, better looking or better handling car. No matter what you own that'll always be the case.

I'm 20 and have an import.. I wont say how much more my insurance is.

It'll be worth it to see peoples faces when you step out of the S3.

I'm 20, 3 years no claims and paying less than a third of that on a v6 4motion Golf, I know it aint an S3 but it's still under 7s to 60 and just over 200bhp..

Personally I could never justify paying more than a grand for insurance, but if you've got the money and can make the justification then that's fair enough, have you thought about a lower power 1.8T? seems they all respond fairly well to mapping - was chatting to a guy at the pureklas meet the other night, 210bhp from a 150 with a simple map, not sure if this'd cost less in total, depends if the price hikes purely because of the "S3" badge I suppose... I know the S3 is the complete package but that is a lot of money for a years insurance imo!

Dude go to brentacre! They just renewed my insurance at just under £1300 fully comp on the my GTI and gave me a quote of £1700 fully comp on 225 audi TT! Plus I live in a BADD!!!! postcode!

Yeah i would try brentacre as I'm with them at the moment too, I'm only toying with the idea, I just think I'm only young once so why not you know? before i know it ill end up with a house and kids and never have the chance to be able to afford to run something like that haha.

well ill be 20 next year with 3 years ncb etc, just remapping may put the insurance up more than insuring a standard s3 lol.

And my steriotype opinon, at 19 with that power there is more chance of bining it, you lose the car ££££, NCB and then you pay for it for the next couple of years driving a gary car that your mates laugh at.

Save the extra money the insurance would cost over the next 2-3 years and then splurge it on the car or track days instead of pissing it away on insurance. You're only young once, yes, but unless you're planning on being an old man at 22-23 then you'll still be young for as long as you want to.

Plus saving as much money as possible whilst still living with your parents is vital unless you plan on living at home until you're 30+.

s3's look nice standard. Why not compromise and buy one but keep it standard? Certain you could insure it for less than 2k..

If you can afford it mate, do it. Just remember that the running costs are going to be nothing short of astronomical.

If you think its possible and are that bothered about driving a car like that do it man, you only live once.

In my opinion I think it ain't worth it I have mates that have done this, astra vxr, megane sport etc etc and they are bored of the power and running costs after a few months.

If you can afford it mate, do it. Just remember that the running costs are going to be nothing short of astronomical.

If you've factored in running costs, fuel (I assume the S3 will be drinking higher octane stuff although it may not be required, won't be long before it's £80 a tank), at least yearly servicing incl garage hours (if you don't do things yourself), but chances are something will need replacing eventually and don't mind the insurance cost then you might as well go for it like you said whilst you're young.

I'll be honest going from a 1.6 6n to the golf v6 I've really been caught out on the above, for starters parts are a lot more expensive and there is a hell of a lot more to go wrong as it's a much more complicated car, not to mention fuel costs! A small part of me can see the day ahead where I have to sell up for something more economical and it's kinda gutting, if you can afford to run it now without bankrupting yourself then get it done!

The reason for the slight change in my opinion is in the last month I've been hit with a £200 repair bill, that is just parts as I fitted them myself. Then I went out for a decent drive after sorting it all and could not stop smiling like an idiot.. Just be prepared for dealers to look at you like some kind of idiot when you tell them you've got an S3 and you're 19... Listers VW were nothing short of surprised when I told them the car the parts were for and asked me if I was sure it was the 2.8 twice

At 19 years old, I'd rather have something small and fast that you could really chuck around.

If you want it go for it. If i was in your position id go for something thats a bit less harmful on the wallet if you stack it into a ditch.

but to get a car of equal spec new would be like £20k+ and cost more etc, surely buying something older for like 1/4 of the price works out cheaper for both maintenance costs and everything else.

cost of repairs is not an issue as i can repair myself, i can get parts at trade price minus a bit more. my dads owned several audis and tbh they cost no more to maintain than any other car, less things go wrong than on a cheaper car.

just be nice to jump in a nice comfortable quiet car, stick heated seats on, cruise down the motorway etc, and have some go and look nice too.

to mod a car to how id like it would cost about the same amount as an s3, maybe more, and probably be worse on fuel as it would be pushing performance etc.

car cost and maintenance doesnt bother me, insurance is my only drawback tbh, the 20vt's are good for 35+mpg when driven to suit anyway.

would just be nice to have something like that as a daily car, nothing stopping me buying something for track use etc etc anywho.

maybe worth waiting til I'm 21 though hey? 4 years ncb hopefully and 21 may help insurance too :)

Don't get me wrong I'm not suggesting going for something newer, just mentioning that they are a lot more complicated than a 6N polo. That isn't to say they will be any less reliable, just that there are more parts that could fail. But judging on your last post you're quite familiar with cars anyway and do your own work yourself so it's a lot less of a concern.

I've gotta agree with you, I love jumping into the heated leathers and bombing down the Fosse Way when I go back home, the journey is so much more enjoyable and comfortable, the extra go really makes a difference when it comes to trying to get past a slow moving lorry as well, which is pretty typical of that route too! It'll always be the case that you could get insurance cheaper if you wait, but then where do you draw the line?

I must admit I am kinda jealous of the gains that can be had out of a 1.9 Tdi, although that jealously soon goes when I give mine some and hear the petrol roar

i was looking at mk4 r32's too, but most people are saying an s3 is a better option lol?

and yeah i definately appreciate how more complex they are compared to a simple polo, just modern cars in general are.

i work at jag/landrover, I'm sure one of the older range rovers had around 45 ecus for all the systems on the vehicle - thats a lot to go wrong, let alone all the air suspension/adaptive damping, auto boxes diffs etc etc etc, makes an s3 look simple lol, not that ill own a range rover mind

i'd say if you are not too fussed about the money then go for the r32 much better car in my opinion, never been a big fan of the old s3 but the sound of the r32 is to die for
