That's the problem with the .:R in my mind, they seem to go for 2-3x what I paid for my v6 and they aren't a huge amount more car, I suppose it could be argued either way but I just don't see where all the money is going.

Yeah I know a fair amount about Range Rovers, having grown up working on a classic and spent the last few years playing with a P38A. Put a brand new engine in the P38A last Winter.. that was good fun, crazy cars though, got a copy of the diagnostic software and the things you can control and monitor from the laptop considering the age of the car is ridiculous.

Fast, well mines got the later engine in so not the mk4 lump even though it basically is a mk4 R. But it doesnt hang around.

Its on a par with my 1.8T 265bhp TT i had before. If anything abit more top end.

You'll be blowing silly money on a 20vt's if you get a nail. There heavy on maintenance and nothings cheap. High mileage will be popping turbo's and the gearbox's are like 6n2 GTi's

But at 80-90mph on motorway mines hardly working at all. Over 30mpg on a run.

20 round town. But THAT noise has never made me look back. Turbo is a thing of the past for now....With the 20vt off boost its just a 1.8. On idle there renound for sounding like a diesel. The V6 is allways there in the background as I've mentioned before. You have to go in one to get what i mean.

but to get a car of equal spec new would be like £20k+ and cost more etc, surely buying something older for like 1/4 of the price works out cheaper for both maintenance costs and everything else.

cost of repairs is not an issue as i can repair myself, i can get parts at trade price minus a bit more. my dads owned several audis and tbh they cost no more to maintain than any other car, less things go wrong than on a cheaper car.

just be nice to jump in a nice comfortable quiet car, stick heated seats on, cruise down the motorway etc, and have some go and look nice too.

to mod a car to how id like it would cost about the same amount as an s3, maybe more, and probably be worse on fuel as it would be pushing performance etc.

car cost and maintenance doesnt bother me, insurance is my only drawback tbh, the 20vt's are good for 35+mpg when driven to suit anyway.

would just be nice to have something like that as a daily car, nothing stopping me buying something for track use etc etc anywho.

I was in the same shoes as you were 3 years ago but a couple of years older (only learned to drive when I was 20). I drove a Vauxhall Belmont for the first year I passed, then moved up to a optionless BMW 316 for the same price insured fully comp group 11 (22 now?). Was hovering around the £800 mark. I had been looking at cars in the 16-17 insurance group bracket, (32+?), but the insurance was often triple that of the BMW. I could afford it but I didn't want to spend it.

After two years I was longing for the nicer interior so started to look again, could afford it and then was able to get insured for around the £800 mark again for a C230K. So that was age 23 with 3 years no claims.

So maybe the extra year or two No claims will help, but the unfortunate thing is nothing is 100% certain. Just go for a car with a half decent lump and a mint interior for a year or so more, then go for the 250hp+ car. I'm fairly certain if I had managed to get the 320 with a decent interior for my second car I may not have swapped to the Merc.

But again, things may change in a few years, maybe you do have a prang and your premium goes up or fuel costs/tax etc sky rocket. But if you tuck the money away in savings that you would've spent on just the insurance you should be able to reap the benefits in a few years.

I wouldn't get the diesel tbh, having owned a 190bhp 320lb/ft seat ibiza tdi I would say you will get just as shit mpg when driving fast! The torque is fantastic but it can't really put the power down with fwd (spins in 3rd far too easily in the wet). Plus to get a hybrid turbo, uprated flywheel/clutch, intercooler, exhaust and remap will cost well in excess of £2k in parts alone, and it doesn't have the looks of the s3 (wider arches and bumpers)

it doesnt keep me awake at night, i wouldnt worry so much about what your mates have

you could buy a tuned ibiza cupra insure it for cheaper and rinse all your mates though
