Hey peeps

Just a quick question have done searches but nothing answers this!!

Got a polo Gt on bike carbs!! Have the large crankcase breather just with a

Filter on the end but it seems to have a little bit of smoke coming from it!!

It's not loads but it's enough to notice it!!

I've had all the crankcase breather pipes off and have had the crankcase breather pod off and cleaned it all out and it's all fine and clear and neither of the pipes are collapsing!!

My question is, is there anything else I can do with it?

Obviously it's normaly vented back to the air filter so the engine just burns it off and you don't notice it so wondered if there is anyhing else I could do with it!!

What you reckon install a catch tank then run what would be the return to the air filter? And hope for clean air ??

Never used a catch can before so sorry for the newbish question lol

I use a MK2 screenwash tank as a catch tank and a MK2F screenwash tank for the screen.

With my '02 engine i now use the cam sensor socket for the upper breather outlet,with the 6n design breather box for crankcase pressure as before.

It never spilt oil before though,i just had the breather pipe posted into the front n/s chassis leg. At least that wont rust for another 26years.

Mikey, did you have yours just venting into the leg then, allowing the oil to collect inside the chassis leg? I seem to remember you talking about this a while back, and you had used expanding foam or something

No foam,there was simply no oil.

I really dont know how people manage to get oil out the breather. Unless its blocked,but i washed mine years ago and used it on every engine.

I ran it up in the bay for a while and could see steam pouring out the corner of the raised bonnet sometimes. Never been oil though,pipe's always been dry as a bone. Does coat the area in greasy deposits over time but in the MK2's front crossmember you'd see oil if it spilt it. Nope,just dry surface rust..

The truth will out now with the catch tank,but i expect it will remain bone dry but for the walls getting dirty with said dark dry greasy deposits over time (I've painted the tank matt black to cover this asthetically). Unless this AVY breathes more heavily,of course.

is it necessary to have the catch tank? I'm getting steam too, same as AIR-S and just threw a filter on it. its on my 1.3 mk2 golf.

car runs grand and theres no oil or anything coming up the pipe.

would it be grand leaving as is?

I think it depends on the engine. A G40 that hasn't just been rebuilt will soon start to fill a catch tank.

See i get oil going up to my air filter on the 1.3 ATM. Though I'm sure it was over filled for a while. And it wouldn't surprise mr if it was blocked somewhere

I run my crank breather to the tank then the return goes down the back of the engine bay and sits just short of the floor pan. So any deposits just lacquer my floorpan :) but so far this afh has been a superb breather. My old 2g used to fill my c.tank in a weel no probs and its rings were pretty poo pooed.
