Insurance and what car

Featured Replies

I'm getting really annoyed with the cost of running a car nowadays. Its just stupid that when I was 19 I paid £400 for a Golf Gti and now

at 25 years old  the cheapest quote for a 1.2 fiesta is £600!! I mean what the HELL.

The whole way they come up with the prices seems to be different now and I need a runaround, does anyone know if certain cars are cheaper to insure? Seems

the ones you expect to be cheap (saxo/106/fiesta) aren't cheap!

check parkers for the lowest insurance group, they range from 1-50 now.

mind you girls are getting shafted of late (wahey ;) ) due to these equality laws. so instead of lowered premiums for males, its just boosted the premiums up on girls!

plus i think they are just pricing you out of driving a 1.2 fiesta, as you may be inclined to crash it into a wall so you dont have to live with the shame xx

I'm sure they base them on what cars are crashed more often though... and the likes of 106's/saxos are notoriously done up by boy-racers of 17/18 so probably have a higher crash rate than other cars. Its cheaper for me to be insured on a 1.8 16v vectra than it is on a 1.2 saxo... and it has to be down to the percentage of those type of cars that get crashed.. annoyingly so,

I wish it was purely down to ncb.. the more you drive, the cheaper, but it doesnt seem to be that way

as mentioned above it seems to go more off which car's are crashed more, if you want cheap insurance then get thinking outside the box. get quotes on some thing that isn't popular with youths/first time drivers

So you're telling me I've got to buy one of these?

Its alright actually because I was only looking at those small cars because of cheap insurance, so if they're not then I can get something not as girly :-D

What's the post code like for risk? any no claims?

What's already been said about commonly crashed cars does seem to apply so definitely try something a little less common and see if that's any better. There are some quite epic ways of using this to play the system, perhaps not suitable for a runaround though!

Yeah that's with about 2/3 years no claims proof and living in a town in North Yorkshire.

'Big papa this is small fish..do you read me....rendevous at Harry Ramsdens at 0800 hours....over'

Weird, that does seem rather high in that case, I mean I know women's insurance premiums have spiked lately but they can't have gone above men's surely?

I'm a few years younger than you and have been getting quotes for a similar price on my car (4 years no claims admittedly but I didn't think the 1 extra year outweighed being over 23 :?

I suppose just have a play with confused.com with some other cars and also ring around a bit, also fully comp nearly always seems cheaper if you're willing to have a big excess (and the car isn't worth a major amount)

the quote on the mk2 went from £440 TPFT to some thing like £1200 fully comp. when i asked why they said it was because my car wasn't worth a lot

Its almost like the government is intentionally trying to price people off the road. With huge increases in petrol cost, large hikes in insurance prices and road tax going up every 6 months.

I'm sure if they were really bothered they'd reduce fuel duty, kick the insurance market up the arse, and make road tax payable by direct debt.

I can't help but think they want people off the road, or at least using less petrol and more public transport because of environmental issues.

Well there goes that theory

For me its been cheaper to go fully comp with a £500 excess then TPFT for both the golf and polo :S

fully comp, No no claims. 500 quid excess. 710 a year on a 3.2L TT.

3 points too but there nearly 5 years old now

the word annoying comes to mind haha, paying double that for a 1.4 16v mk5 and 2 years no claims and 0 points haha... then again I'm 19.

On the note of more commonly crashed cars it must be true. To go on my mums insurance on a 1.2 Fiat Punto, £1, 200 per year. For me to have my own policy on my 1.3 Mk2, £740.

Just put in the time to thoroughly get quotes for loads of different cars on several different insurers. Keep in mind that similar cars can return various prices dependant on their age.

you should buy one of these:

I'm 22, 4 years NCB, fully comp £287.00

Thats a 1.4 'Merit' (poverty spec)

Edit: Cannot believe the paint work was that good 2 years ago, its shot too bits now!

Fully comp £500 excess, 4 years no claims, £50 more, 400cc less, mind you I think I'm a few years younger :p

Keeping it 'polo' my old 6n was pretty reasonable as a runaround, 350 a year full comp, 3yrs ncb 20yrs old

as for the thinking outside the box theory - for example a lupo sport 100bhp is a lot cheaper to insure than a 6n 16v 100bhp

Nearly right. They want it to LOOK like they want people off the road and in public transport for the good of the environment, whilst they KNOW that Public Transport aint up to the job and people HAVE to use their cars no matter how much it costs them. Cha-Ching for the treasury whilst looking like you're doing the right thing.

check out volvos.......... big un's me mates boyfriend has just passed his test at 26 tried a mk2 polo for insurance and they wanted £900 found a volvo 240 saloon ( in 70's mustard yellow with a chocolate brown interior) and got it for £300 and his insurance is even less than that.

I was paying 750 3rd party for a lightly modded mk3 coupe...just ordered a 'monte carlo' fabia 1.6tdi and its 600 fully comp, £20 tax per year too which isnt bad!

1600 fully comp, 1.4 8v 6n, 1year driving, 0 NCB, 20 years old

When i first started driving my insurance was 2500 3rd party, with parents on policy as named drivers on 1.4 8v 6n...And i was 19 :o

3708 fully comp, V6 mitsubishi FTO import, 1year NCB, 2 years driving, 20 years old.
