HI all

1997/8 1.4 8 valve

I recently posted about the front hub nut. It's the 12 point type hi torque nut.

I've been trying to tighten the nut up but find a 30mm socket is a loose fit and 29mm socket is too small. Can someone please put me out my misery and tell me if its a special VW socket?

The trouble I have is the 30mm socket is starting to shear the nut as its a ever so slightly loose fit :(

Mk2s are a 30mm. I shouldn't think it's a special Vw tool. Is your socket a cheap one? I find thy can be a little sloppy on fit sometimes. Either that or try a 6 sided socket

Yeah the hub nuts on 6ns are different to older polo ones, i think you can buy the right socket from gsf although wait for someone with a 6n to confirm this, i wouldn't try tightening it with an ordinary 30mm socket.

There's no mention of a special socket being required in the VW manual (ElsaWin)

Have you tried imperial? 1"3/16 or 1"5/32 ?

I went to a good hardware shop who also does tools, the chap is very knowledgeable. He checked his magic book for the imperial equivalent and they are either slightly larger or slightly smaller :( It feels as if I need a 0.5mm size which doesn't seem to exist.

I have got the thing on nice and tight, this time I went for 3/4 drive rather than 1/2 drive so I can get lots of torque on it. Touch wood, all seems well but it just seems odd that the nut is slightly loose fit in the socket.

It might be worth mentioning I got the nuts with the new bearing kits, maybe these are made to an odd size? I can't remember the name of the bearing manufacturer tho! One was Uni part the other I can't remember

You might be right about cheap tools, but I tried both Teng and Elora, I thought (esp) Elora were meant to be a good make these days?
