Anyone know anything about corners?

Featured Replies

Does anyone know how sharp or blind a corner has to be to be legally displayed with warning signs and turning chevrons? stuff like that?

Cheers.

Pretty sure there is no legal requirement on anything except main roads. Guessing someone was going a bit to quick and didn't see something?

As above, plenty of corners round near me that have no markings.

have you crashed the coupe?

I was driving like a nice person and I came up to a blind sharp turn. I stacked it and now I want to pass on the blame to the council for not making me aware of the blind turn.

Cheers.

Fixed it for you.

sadly, i couldn't have put it better myself. locked the brakes and went into an oncoming car at about 20mph.

the poor things drivable but definitely written off.

i'm picking it up from the garage later as i'd probably only get about £400 for it and that's about my excess anyway,

couldn't bare to see it scrapped either, i'll either be breaking it or fixing it up.

i'll put up a couple of photos later

Learn to read corners and look for the limit points, signs are all well and good but if you can't read where the black stuff is coming from then your pretty much stuffed.

wish i took a different route,

surely the reputation of the corner causing about 2 crashes every week was enough to put me off, obviously not.

little tip for the future, instead of focusing on 2 or 3 car lengths in front of you and getting caught out by a deceptive bend, look to the furthest point up the road you can focus on. this will greatly improve your driving, as it gives you more time to react to things.

if you buy a mk2 next, the lack of a brake servo will make you a better driver or kill you. I owned a mk2.

I'm still alive.

So you already knew this was a dangerous corner and that about 2 crashes a week happen on it, so why would you need a sign?

What's the damage to it? I'll be breaking my mk3 in the coming weeks so might be able to sort you out the stuff you need cheap

I shall take all this into account, thanks.

And i was actually considering a mk2, but maybe not so much now ha, my luck ain't feeling too great.

just had the car dropped round now, it's in a pretty sad state...

Thankfully it was the wing that needed replacing anyway...

The chassis hasn't been permanently damaged, thank god. but there's a hell of alot to still do.

A part of the engine has snapped, you can see in the photo. Not sure what this is though, help anyone? it's just underneath the perforated tube.

Opinions anyone?

would it be worth rebuilding it until it is driveable again or is it too much work?

should I just Break it and sell all the parts?

I'd never been that route and I didn't realise that it was the corner in question until too late.

and yer keep me posted on that, that'd be great. the photos are up there ^

I would be more concerned with the angle of the drivers side wheel mate, get it jacked up and inspect underneath for any thing twisted, bent or cracked (pay particular attention to areas around any suspension mounting places).

You may be lucky as what you hit was quite high up taking the impact away from the delicate chassis legs, plus the other car would of absorbed some of the force too. If the chassis is ok then with some bending, hammering and maybe a little cutting and welding to get every thing straight enough to bolt new panels on to it should be ok. I think the drivers inner wing would take the most work to sort out.

That snapped bit is the engine mount, just bolts off and only takes a couple of mins to swap using a jack and a 17mm socket/ratchet

Your best bet is to unbolt any bolt off bits like the wing, bonnet, bumper ect to get a better idea of what's going on, all that twisted metal might be making it look worse than it actually is. Is this just a standard polo? Because if it is I can't see you getting much back by breaking it mate

I've just jacked it up and took the front drivers side wheel off, everything looks fine. i think it's just cuz i'm parked on a slope and the wheels arent turned straight, the photo makes it look weird.

It's drivable seeing as I had to park it there from the road.

I'm taking all the bolt on bits off now, the wings being a bastard though, some of the bolts are covered in underseal.

i'll throw some pictures up later with everything taken off of it.

and it's all standard apart from the lowering springs which wouldn't go for loads anyway, think i'm gonna do my best to fix it up

cheers mate.

Yeah 3 bolts inside near the drivers door are a bit of an arse thanks to that underseal but the wing is also sealed on along there and its hard to get off without bending the wing... that's not an issue here so you can just rag the fucker off once all the bolts are out

There really not hard to get off tho if you don't need to keep the wing straight tho mate

Hi mate, i'll let you know later on if i'll take you up on that offer. i need to keep all this as budget as possible though seeing as i'm also having to pay the 500 quid excess, and that'd be loads to post yer.

Right, well i've just got the right wing off and put the wheel back on.

There's a problem however, I'm guessing the spring and suspension going to the wheel should be vertical? cuz it's not right now

I think the crash has forced it back a fair bit cuz when i put full lock on it rubs against the arch and you can easily tell the wheel isn't supposed to be that far back.

Here's a photo of it. There's no dents, cracks and it's not twisted anywhere that i can see.

Is it something to do with the plastic cap at the top as this isn't sitting in place, it's at an angle, you can just see it in the photo

bottom pic is probably your wishbone bent , check the shocks for leaks , which will tell you if its damaged

looks like you might be lucky! have you checked the roof for ripples and that the doors open properly

  • Author

The roof is ripple free but the drivers side door has fell a little bit and needs to be lifted to be closed, what does that signify?

and there is a little mark on the drive underneath my car where something has dripped however i think this is just the brake fluid spilt when parking the car as there is no cap on the brake fluid now.

How can I tell if the wishbone has been bent? i'm guessing it's not an easy fix?

i can say with the fullest of confidance that the wish bone will not be bent on this car

mate get the wheel off and get some photo's of the bar to goes from the chassis to the front suspension asembaly and also some photo's of around the mount where it bolts on to the chassis. it will be one of these that is your problem, one is an easy fix and the other isn't
