Gaz's MK3 Coupe CL

Featured Replies

Hey,

Thought I would start a project thread seeing as I've now got a Polo. First off, I'm actually amazed at how nice it is to drive considering it's a 20 year old motor, the engine is silent and I thought I'd hate only having 4 gears but they're fine.

So it's a 1991 VW Polo CL 1.3. It's so basic but I love that it's so easy to work on and there's less to go wrong! Bodywork is quite tatty, there's a few dents and scrapes but it's only got 58k on the clock and is totally solid. Here's a couple of pics when I got it, I want to sort the bodywork out before I go and give it a good polish and wax.

Driving home my girlfriend took the piss cos my head was touching the ceiling so I had a read around on here and saw that Corrado seats are a straight swap. Used to own a 'rado and had buckets fitted so had a spare set of front seats in the shed. Gave them a good scrub and bolted them in. Such a difference, feels like my bum is skimming the tarmac lol.

Also gave the badges a spray, eventually going to get a badgeless front grill anyway.

The first thing I wanted to sort was the bodywork. There was a tenny bit of surface rust on the drivers side sill which I have sanded and primered. Also bashed out the dent in the tailgate which will need filling, sanding and spraying. Have another scrape on the nearside back wing which will need touching up. Was tempted to spray the roof and bonnet gloss black but will have to do some research see if it will look cool or gash.

And today I sorted out some choons, came with the tape deck which didn't even work and the shocking paper speakers. Plugged in a decent Kenwood headunit and bought a set of 10cm JBL GT5-402 speakers for the dash. Took a bit of chopping of the grills and surround to get them to fit, but they went in eventually and sound a million times better. Looking at doing a door car build with some decent comps as I don't really want a sub in the boot.

That's it so far. Like I said, gotta sort the bodywork first then I'll worry about dropping it and sorting some wheels.
