Insurance - P*ssed Off!

Featured Replies

Just rang insurers to inform that I was having some work done to the car, said the couldn't get VW parts so aftermarket TUV approved parts were being used, told them suspension and exhaust were changing

They referred back to their 'technical department' - they won't insure the car unless manufacturer parts are used, so I'm six months into a policy, and will lose the NCB built up...and they want to charge a £30 exit fee and to add insult to injury - as the car is now 20 years old, they wouldn't have offered me renewal due to the age of the vehicle on the grounds that in the event of an accident they wouldn't be able to get hold of manufacturer parts!

Which I went ape sh*t about, as my dad repairs cars for a living, does plenty of insurance work...and I know full well that not all repairs using OE parts, plenty of patent stuff gets used regardless of the age of vehicle to keep costs down and profits up!

This compounds my frustration that I sold my Audi 11 months into a policy and lost the NCB from that...so I'll be losing 18 months of NCB cos insurance companies suck

I rang Chris Knott, said the value of the car is as if it were standard would be around 400, I consider the value of the parts being fitted is nil as they are considered by myself as essential replacement / routine maintenance due to the age of the car...and the minimum value they will insure the car for is £2,000!! And due to me saying 400 on the call they will only now ever insure the car at 400 and won't because of the mods

Am I being a dick by being honest?

Anyone know an insurance company out there that'll insure a classic, not owed by a boy racer, where it's locked up over night in a secure location and during the day is on a MOD site behind armed guards...which just happens to having a overhaul of worn parts in the not so distant future

3years NCB, no points too!

Just don't tell them, its unlikely they will take all the suspension apart if you in a crash just to verify that its OE parts.

Its also a common mis-conception that parking a car in a garage/drive overnight is cheaper, it isn't it far cheaper to tell them you park it on the road.

As for insurance companies. Footman James do good classic car insurance on the website it says you have to be 25 but if you ring them up they can sort it out for you if your younger, ask for young persons classic car insurance. Failing that I find admiral are a very good company, I have my cars insured with them my polo cost me £800 with only 2 years no claims.

Probably worth mentioning, I'm 29

As a point of interest my Audi S4 cost me 750 for the second year I had it...valued at 16000 to replace and running bog standard at a book claimed 344bhp

Insurance industry is corrupt...and not telling them about the upgrades only further compounds the issues and reasoning behind their apparently 'justification' for raised prices

Sucks

and the world wonders why people dont bother with not declaring there mods?! its bloody rediculous ! get some people with sense on the phone ! took me nearly 20 minutes to explain to the b*tch on the phone what coilovers were !

Spoke to a company called HIC, same bloody story, only this time they gave me quotes

I told them I also lived away from home during the week and the car was secured night and day, giving them the postcodes for all locations

I declared the following as zero value modifications with a car value of £400

Suspension

Exhaust & manifold

Panel air filter

G40 callipers

Original fitment option wheels (being the Speedlines were available on the Golf...)

TPFT - 800

FC - >1000

WHAT THE FUCK?!

Might be getting somewhere, with Admiral, who I've used before

Full mods declared using confused.com and a value of the car at £2000 (yes, TWO GRAND), 250 excess and we're looking at 576 fully comp

Almost acceptable, now for some bartering with Admiral to save them paying confused.com

:)

Right so it's like this

Car is valued at £2,000 to include the aforementioned modifications. The policy is FC as opposed to the current TPFT, excess is £500, I figure this being the cost of another GT in the event of total write off then I'd just buy back the car, buy another GT and transfer the modified parts - or something like this

Main address and current work location specified (oddly enough a secure car park in Portsmouth costs more to insure than a driveway in Cheltenham (and not exactly a nice area either!)

10 month accelerator, which appealed due to the farcical way in which insurance NCB is calculated

£488, which £160 quid more than I currently pay

Admiral, I've used them before, when I had a poxy Ka for a commute I was doing, cheap then, cheap now...Wales based call centre, should have remembered them

Also learnt something about Admiral whilst I was attempting a haggle (give me discount to save you paying commission to confused.com) - Admiral IS confused.com...little embarrassing but definitely amusing and informative!

Not so pissed off now, all I have to do is try and convince my current insurer they won't be charging me a £30 quid exit fee

I think it's only Money Supermarket who are not owned by any insurance/finance company. The rest, Go Compare, Confused etc are all owned by somebody and will always be biased.

This is always handy as it lets you know the best order of comparison sites to check first!

Hmmm just be aware that these 10 month accelerator ncb will only be recognised by admiral, so come the end of the policy if you want to use them you will have to renew with them. It's a very cunning trick to keep you with them.

I'm surprised that the hic quote was do high, they are normally pretty good with modified vw's.

+1 I'm with admiral and they were the cheapest for me (i still pay over 2K) would have been 1400 with the 10 month accelerator but id rather have a full years NCB to use anywhere, really does pay off to read the small print.

I was told different when I started my policy with them. Phoned them up to check some details (they had the wrong year down on the site for my 6n) and I asked if it could be changed to another insurer at the end of the 10months if elsewhere was cheaper and the lady told me it would be possible.

Cheers for the heads up, I'll probably stay with Admirial tbh - I used them for a multi car policy last year, and probably will again next year when I get a new daily :)

IGNORE THIS ^

Bare in mind what you may have found does not apply to everyone else and every insurance company.

Sounds like you need to speak to a specialist (modification friendly) insurer. Most insurers you find on price comparison sites etc are set up to deal with standard UK car insurance, usually as soon as you start modifying they do not know what to do!

Incorrect, you can take your NCB to another insurer long as policy is finished and all payed up confirmed from elephant who also own bell and admiral. :)

I know they've already posted in this thread, but give Sky Insurance a call - we get a club discount and they've done me decent deals for the past 2 years on 2 of our cars.

x2 on that.

When they quoted me, the first thing I said was "are you sure?"

Yup, I asked admiral before taking out the 10 month bonus accelerator policy if I could transfer the NCB else where after and they confirmed it ;d

Of cause you can take your policy any where you like once its finished, the question is will the new company accept a ten month policy as a years no claims? After all you haven't had a full year of no claims driving so why would they give you a discount?

It's down to the company that you are moving to as to whether they will recognise it or not. When you asked admiral if you could take these no claims to another company they told you yes, which is true you can take them with you... but what you should of been asking is will these 10 months no claims be recognised by other companies?

They said they will send proof of 1 years ncb to me!
