Declaring for mods not on car yet?

Featured Replies

My insurance comes up at the end of the month. I'm not realistically going to get my bike carbs fitted by then and I'm of course going to declare them when I fit them.

My question, to avoid the mid term adjustment cost, can I declare the bike carbs as a mod if the standard parts are on the car still if that makes sense? Or will I get into bother?

Also, I suppose I would just tell them that it's 'non standard carbs' as opposed to anything more detailed. Would they ask for the hp they'd add on and if so do I have to prove it?

Cheers guys

Your best bet is to speak to your insurers about it.

In the past I've always told them I'm in the process of doing X,Y, Z modifications, and they've seemed happy enough with that - rather than asking for a blow-by-blow account of what spec it'll be on each day.

Most will ask whether it affects the power, and I'd give them a realistic estimation - but that's all you can do, an estimation. Obviously if you tell them it's 50bhp and it's nearer to 150bhp you *might* get caught out (and you deserve to!!), but the difference between 90bhp and 100bhp is going to be hard for them to prove given the massive variability in rolling road results - they'd need a climatically controlled engine dyno to nail you!

Thanks for your reply. Said they would be on within about a month or so and they just said add them now.
