The Ratmobile

Featured Replies

I thought I'd start a new topic and go from day one up til current.

MK2 Facelift Polo Breadvan [Fox] 1l.

I bought the car about 2 and a half years ago for 450 quid, with the plan to make it rat look, so I didn't wash it for a year. It was completely standard, on steels with low mileage [56,000 when I got it, but now sits at 62,000].

But I never got round to doing anything more than lowering it [80mm all round]. And swapping the interior for a CL interior which was less in your face.

Then I decided the paintwork, bodywork etc were in too good condition to ruin them by going ratty, so I started work on going 'quirky'. The plan was to go down low, out wide, cover the windows [but not bodywork] with stickers and roll on the BBS RA's that I'm in the process of polishing the lips on, so here was my photoshop idea...

And here is how it is so far. There is actually more stickers on it now but I don't have any pictures yet... Oh and I painted the steelies gold with hammerite and paintbrushes for GTI Springfest for shiggs.

I've swapped the front seats for height adjustable and much more comfortable seats out of an old scirocco gt2 which only had 40,000 miles on it, so the seats are perfect. They look like these...

I bought these wheels on ebay, with no idea what they came off of, I've been told maybe an old rare audi or a mk1 golf. 7j, vw offset on 165 55's.

Unfortunately when we put them on the car they fitted perfect on the fronts, but the arch sat on top of the tyre at the rear. Here is how it sits at the front. Just legal, looks so good!

227589_10150190292255852_556805851_72294

We tried rolling the arches but they were really solid and double skinned and there's about 10mm standing between the wheels scrubbing everywhere or fitting nicely so I'm now having them flared, and then having a respray on both sides and the bonnet [to cover stone chips].

The flaring will be happening this weekend but will have to wait a short while to get the respray done by a mate.

So watch this space!

I'm currently rolling on the new wheels on the front which have made it a lot lower so the exhaust scrapes a lot more, maccyd's in Dunstable is a killer for speedbumps. Not the mention the fact that as I left Big Bang fest at Santa Pod last weekend the bladdy exhaust fell off so it's tied on with cable ties and hangs lower haha!!!

Oh and I forgot to mention, I have no pictures but I've got clear front indicators and clear side repeaters too, to keep it all neat. And a mk2 golf front splitter on it's way to be modified, also considering making a custom rear splitter out of something as the rear bumper still sits too high for my liking.

If anyone is wondering why it isn't lower coilovers for mk2 / mk2f polo's cost 500 quid at the very bottom end of the market because they are more complicated, something to do with the hub and strut being one peice, which isn't worth it.

FUTURE PLANS involve a g40 engine conversion ;]

I've also now got the whole set of wheels on but it still scrubs on one side so it needs a bit more arch work then a respray. Exciting!

And a photoshoot with my friends mk4.

And that takes you finally up to the current day! Sorry if the posts are a bit confusing time/date wise, I copied them from another forum, that's why there is more than one post!

Today I decided to add some more quirkiness to my car. Took out the sun visors and studded them...

Looking good, those wheels work really well/.

should get them new rims done in gold..red an gold looks sweet imo

Where did you get the plates from mate? I bought some the other weekend from a show, they have a BS number on them but don't know if they're legal or what?

I do love red and gold but I have a lot of white stickers, clear indicators and side repeaters, think the silver works better with them, might reconsider when I get bored though ;]

Dubmeister, through Carnoisseur in Cambridge, they have the correct BSA stamp and they're reflective enough. I could only find dubmeister online as being fully legal ones :]

love the wheels and the fisheye pics :D:thumbsup:

Ah right, the only thing mine dont have is a manufacturer address and name :-( , so don't know if mine are illegal or what?

Nice car too!

Yeah that's what everyone says, they have to have all that written on them now don't they. You could risk it and then if you do get pulled you have the excuse of the BSA stuff but then you'd have to take them off it you got told off, might get lucky and get a slap on the wrist? If not then save them for shows, and thanks! :]

Youve gone the right way with this :) glad you didnt rat it! looks good on them wheels!

Thankyou! Yeah I came to my senses haha!

I've got a splitter for it too, but it sits too low to the floor I can't even get my finger in there with it on, it's a mk2 golf 16v one. Saving it for shows, need to get some pics of it on though :D

sweet.

needs a bit more lows on the front though :)

Oh don't say that :'[ haha I can't get it any lower without cutting springs, coilies start at 500 quid. And I refuse to cut my springs, it's an mot failure anyway.

I might get those uhhhhm blank mind? The things that go on top of your springs and you can use them to get it like 15mm lower?***

But as it is it scrapes the exhaust down any bumpy country roads, and any average to large sized speed bumps :[

***Just remembered, TOP MOUNTS :] durh haha

top caps?

think jackson tuning on here sells them, let the exhaust grind, it stop eventually

Yeah? I'll have a look, and yeah the exhaust has a hole in it already haha! Want to eventually try and get something made so it's like a flat oval pipe rather than round, spread it out but tuck it up kinda thing? Not sure if it'd work, haven't thought it through haha!

If you cut one coil off and the spring doesnt flop about then it isnt an mot failure, so get cutting! I've just slammed the back of mine and I'm gonna cut a couple off the fronts, i can just about get away with that, benoaw had 3 cut off his and they were a bit loose :p looked ace though :D

Also, i couldnt find any topmounts for a mk2f but if you do, give me a shout!

Edit : regarding exhaust issues, get a 4-2-1 mani and then a straight through system, then you dont have the cat and midbox to foul up on stuff, then just use some shortened rubbers on the back to keep it all tucked up

Haha I'm really weary about doing stuff like that, I'd rather wait and save for coilies when I have the g40 so I can adjust to perfection, I'd hate to do it stupid low by mistake cuz I do like 50 miles a day and a lot of it is country roads and speed bumps! I'm sure I've seen mk2f topmounts somewhere online? They're the same as for a mk2. I'll have a look ;]

One coil should do it :) The fk automotive ones that seem to be around dont seem to fit, so be careful! I'm going coilies eventually but i wanna get this bloody thing on the road first!

Just take the speedbumps slowly and at an angle and you'll be fine, just ask robbodred, his is stupid low and he gets by, and thats with him in it

Yeah just read that on here, think they were the ones I'd seen :[ I take speedbumps at like 10mph maximum and at an angle when there's nothing coming towards me, but it's things like country roads where the edges have worn down and the middle is raised that do my head in the most haha! Think it will be a bit better when I fit my new shocks though as as it sits now the shock on the front passenger side is ruined, so when I hit a bump it drops the front right down.

Yea, country roads blow, i do loads of climbing and its always some shitty road like that to get there, i hit so hard sometimes, went from 40 to 20 once, that sucked, on the upside, it flattened my exhaust a lot and it didnt catch anywhere near as much afterwards

If your shocks are fucked its horrid as you're just driving on springs, and that makes for an interesting drive!

Ha maybe I need to hit something hard then? :p

Yeah everywhere I drive no road is perfect enough and cuz I weigh like nothing, it bounces so much worse unless I have a passenger, everywhere is a constant like vibrate on the whole car, my dash goes mental haha!
