Mk water pump woes

Featured Replies

Hi guys

Not sure if any of u guys read my last post about the pump on my mk 2

Well today didn't go well ether, tried to remove the aux pulley again, 3 cap screws came out with a bit of persuasion but the fourth was having none of it, wouldn't budge with mole grips, didn't have a drill bit big enough to drill the head off, tryed with the biggest but no luck, twating a torx bit in there.... Nothing worked

The worse part is that, now my car has a pretty loud metal tapping metal noise, can't find where it's going from, worryingly it sounds like it's coming from the block it's self, was worrying the belt has skipped a bit but the noise does go a way but when it wants and for how ever long it wants.

Also no exhaust has decide to start blowing, it's not loud but when I put my hand over the exhaust it doesn't even struggle, the revs to drop, but only such a small amount it's hard to be sure

Any advice guys?

Cheera

Ye I no, on Monday I'm going to be drilling the bastard out or possibly using the disc cutter

I was looking for some advise on the new noise ?

Cheers

how hard did you hammer the crank?

is the noise in time with the engine or what...cant really diagnose over the internet

get out there and listen..maybe use a screwdriver to your ear to help pin point it

It has took a far old hammering tbh, you thing I may have fooled it?

Will so tomz morning, have a feeling I may have killed it

why are you pulling the aux pulley off to do a water pump or are you doing the Cambelt as well?

Spray the pulley bolts with Plusgas for a few hours and then try.

Loud tapping may be cam timing out. If you've slackened the belt off you should turn the engine over by hand before starting to make sure and stop at the first sign of resistance dont force it (turn back to TDC and check cam pulley alignment).

when I rebuild or re-belt an engine ill turn it over by hand a fair few times listening for anything that shouldn't be there.

Yes I'm changing the cambelt as well

The belt hasn't been slackend, I tired the engine over with a bar on the camshaft bolt...could feel the compression and it turned fine, I'm worried it has some how slipped and may the noise is the vale just tapping the piston

But the noise is strange, it does increase it noise with revs some times but does quiet down when it wants, I only drove it about 3 miles but when I got home the noise had gone, started 30 min later and it was bk:((

Wondering if it's some how related to the blowing exhaust that started at the same time

Cheers

Also where is the crank pully allighntment mark?

Also where is the crank pully allighntment mark?

big arrow on the plastic case ..and a notch on the metal pulley

If the manifold is blowing then it can come from there. my gaskets failed (again) and at certain RPM's it sounds like a plane engine.

the mark is on the plastic housings. Cam timing is a plastic arrow and lines up with a dot on the pulley, Crank is on the plastic housing surrounding the lower pulley 2 points stick out over the top of the Aux pulley, the timing mark is a small dash on the Aux pulley.

One little bit of advice old lad, NEVER EVER turn the engine over with a bar on the camshaft, the timing belt is not designed to carry all of the load that you would put on it under those conditions, besides, if you do manage to turn the engine, the crankshaft mark would be moving TWICE the distance of the camshaft mark, making it just about impossible to position it accurately for timing purposes.

Ok guys, had a crack at it today, my belt had skipped one tooth so I decided to just replace the water pump and use the old belt as I had to time it bk up any way, long story short the pump was in there pretty solid, gave it a few hits with the hammer as hard as I darw but still no luck just gonna get it in to a garage to avoid Amy more damage. Strangely every time I timed it bk up and put a ratchet on the cam and turned it it would skip a tooth again so aftet many attempts it stayed in time and runs, the noise is still there but very quiet compared to before

Last time I fuck with cambelts I think lol

As the car runs fine is there a possibility of any damage?

Cheers

That's another good reason for not turning it by the camshaft; As all of the 'slack' in the belt is on the waterpump side, when you try to turn the camshaft, it will try to 'gather up' all of the slack and place it at the front (between the camshaft and crankshaft) thus putting the timing out again.

You ask if there is a possibility of engine damage, the answer of course has to be 'yes', but the PROBABILITY may well not be high, it all depends on whether or not the valves contacted the pistons. I am a bit concerned about this noise, and it really depends upon what is causing it, a compression test might be advisable.

Regards.
