Yeah I've read up on the VR6 maf but i can also use the MAF from an S3, depends what pops up first. Well ill be using the audi keys and ecu so it'll all tie in togther.

My mate who's helping me out has done 3 1.8T conversions before and he recons its easier using the full loom which i thought it would be anyway its just getting the niggly bits sorted such as lights and heating stuff etc that'll be a little trickier.

Shoud it? I've had a look around and they did K04's with 8, 10 and 12 blades =/ ill see how it maps up and ifs it pathetic ill get it sent back and replaced, but thanks for pointing it out mate.

I know i dont have too but i can get the engine the sit better by welding my own mounting plates in, means the front end will be balanced better as i have the use of a jig to get it perfect...ish.

cheers the the help and info :)

agu uses the earlier style maf so you need the vr maf, i have 2 x s3 maf housings but thay are no good for you as the probes are different shape (vr / agu have square plud - s3 has rounded plug)

the only peson i've seen use the full loom had to do a full dash swap too, there is so much electronics and modules that need to communicate on a3 / mk4 platform cars it's rediculous.

genuine stock k04-022 and 023 turbos only came with ten blades, even the rare k04-011 which is a direct fit to k03 mani / dp etc has 10 blades.

i'd be tempted by the custom fab mounts too, i like a bit of welding :unibrow:

Ahh I've got you, looks like ill be getting a VR maf then cheers for that, its all a learning curve :)

hmmm...recon I've been screwed over then with this K04? might nip it to my local turbo specialist and see what they say about it...

Yeah just seems a better plan i know its alot hard but should be a better result :)

i'm not saying it won't perform but there are a lot of copies floating about which don't last long.

if i'd locked on to this thread earlier, the easiest option regarding bang for buck and ease of fitment would have been hybrid k03 which can hit 250bhp with right mods, fits on to existing mani, boost pipes oil and water lines and DP which is easier to fab for the polo as it's down exit where the k04 is side exit dp.

  • Author

yeah in know what your saying id rather buy one thats decent and have it last for a long time than blow up every 3 months or whatever =/

i know it wouldve been eaier but i got a manifold off my mate and just had all the oil and coolant lines made up, plus i wanted a bit more than 250Bhp ;)

k04 is a good turbo, it's not that common an upgrade on the mk4 these days with the hybrid k03 making good figures. the k04 will make around 270bhp, the agu as with all blocks below 225bhp stock have higher compression ratios so mappers aren't keen to run so much boost pressure.

i'm glad i went k04, i abused a used turbo i got for next to nothing for around a year until the seals started weaping oil then got cr to hybrid it which is apparently capable of 300bhp, i don't use my car much anymore so mapping sessions are as and when i can be bothered so haven't got it to it's full potential.

what sort of bhp are you aiming for? you think you'll be able to get over 250 down in a polo? i've almost done the conversion in a 6n2 for myself soo many times but ended up doing mk2 golfs etc.

  • Author

yeah well the my mate thats helping me out has done 1.8T mk2's a few times and for his latest one he used an AGU, basically same set up as me etc but hes running a Hybrid K04, cant remember who did it for him now but he's running 312bhp on a AGU! Which i thought was alot and running something like 1.2bar of boost? Sure thats right anyway ill find out tonight and post a spec up.

I think ill see how this K04 runs and maps up, R-tech might be able to fit launch control to it aswell so that'd help put some of the power down.

We'll see...

Edit: Id be happy too see over 240bhp.

Failing to see why you've went 4 bar FPR?

  • Author

I have it incase I need to run it basically sticking with the 3 bar for the time being.

Keep it up mate!

any updates yet?

This is helping me alot dude :) some interesting stuff i didnt know about some of the turbos!

What shafts are you going to be using?

i was pretty keen on using the full loom from a donor car too, polo6n2g40 why do you think it would be easier to use a combo of them both?

Cheers, sonny.

But soon i as i can ill get an update up and it will be a biggeeee ;)

I'm making my own shafts and perfecting them and then gonna take them to a local company who make shafts from nothing and get them to replicate mine but out of one peice so there solid :)

Modified the Audi's gear shifter and system so it will now fit on the polo meaning no messing about with polo linkages etc....

Modified the Audi's Fuel Pump aswell so that fits in, all i had to change over was the outside casing to the polo one so that it would get the fuel level right and not foul on the tank.

Passenger side clearence cutting for gearbox and mount, decided that when everythings in place were going to cut the large folded lips off the chassis rails and then seam weld them up, same goes with the other chassis rail, lower arms and the subframe.

Also treated myself to a shallow sump from Awesome GTI, i haven't fitted it up yet and for some insane reason the picture wont upload.

Gonna really crack on with this week and get stuck in with the welder and hopefully get her back to the bodyshop by the end of the month then the progress will really pick up ;)

Looking really good now man :) you got any pics of how you have bolted it onto the chassis legs? :)

I suppose you have used the standard Audi mounts?

Cheers man, she's still not fully in, cutting out some bits of the strut tomorow so we can get the mounting plates welded in and then the fun begins!

Yeah I'm using the standard Audi mounts, makes life simple and spares easier :)

Updates needed!! ;)

I'm not going to bother updating untill January, leave you wondering whats happened :)

when you fitted the fuel pump- did you take photos of the parts you swapped over? i thought the pump is identical almost to the mk5 polo pump? i haven't got round to this yet...i plan on using the stock 225bhp TT pump.

not sure why you cut out so much from the passenger side- must be the bellhousing on your box being so big?

can't wait to see some more updates. 8-)

I didn't take any pictures but the problem i had was that the sender float from the A3 was hitting on the polo tank as its in a different place so first i unlcipped that off the polo pump and put it on the A3 pump but this meant that the float was on the wrong side of the pump therefore reading backwards. So i took the whole of the cream outer casing off inlcuding the sender float, theres a series of clips all around it and you have to unplug the sender reader then its just a case of take off re-fit.

That massive hole isnt there anymore, that was when we were trying to get the engine to sit alot more stock-like but it was a fail... so we braced it with angle iron on the inside then fitted plate over the top and basically rebuilt the leg. Now I'm just left with a notch for the box.

Update - Its in ;)

Thanks for that...i just didnt know how you did it, but makes sense to me now- you seperated the float arm/top half of the pump by undoing the plastic corregated hose and unclipped it and fitted it to the TT pump- i think is what you did...I guess i'll have to see what happens- Naz already uses the mk5 gti i fitted from last time, so his float arm is probably in the same direction as the TT's one so my guess is, i wont need to change anything over as he runs a mk5 gti interior. :-)

It might be youll find out soon enough, if you do have to swap any bits over just be careful because all that time in fuel makes them a little fragile, i had to get another Audi pump because i broke the first one =/
