basically a friend has bought a car which seems to have smoothed side repeaters, are they a legal requirements on a mk2f coupe? i'm sure there's a law which says if you can see the front indicators from the side or something they aren't required but i don't really know :S

Yep, If you can see the front and/or rear ones from the side then you dont need the side repeter.

the mk2f's wraparound slightly, but some of the newer cars with indicators in the middle of a light cluster and there a requirement as you cant see them from the side.

Edit: and/or added as I'm not sure if you actually need to see the rears)

aaah cheers, he's got an mot in a week or two coming up for it and it would be silly if he failed for this reason

Not ok on some mk2s because the fronts are front facing only, but it depends on the age of the car. I think something like pre-1985 cars dont need side repeaters at all and older mk2s never came with them

It all depends on the tester, my old mk3 failed due to them being smoothed off. If this happens what are you going to do? you can stand there arguing the toss with the tester if you like but I can't see that doing you any good

Easiest way I could think of around this was to tape some side repeaters to the wing mirrors with the wiring just coming out the rear of the bonnet. He passed it on the retest like that saying its fine as they were secure, flashed orange and could be seen from the side.

Problem with mot's is that a lot of it depends on the testers interpretation so it's never as black and white as "yeah mk3's have wrap around indy's so it will pass"

1987 IIRC to really split hairs.

My kit car failed on the same thing, being reg'd in 1993. Crazy thing is, it'd been MOT'd most years between build and that fail without a prob.
