I have a 2005 1.2 Polo E (55 PS) and I have driven 101,000 miles in it from new.

Does anyone know what the timing chain change interval is, if there is an interval at all? The engine still has its original chain.

Dont think these engines have an interval. The chain should last forever.

Only heard of the tensioner slacking and then needing adjusting/replacing!

I was once told something similar by someone in a service department at a Volkswagen dealer - but in my experience you cannot always trust what they tell you

I have worked on engines of all sizes and have never known a timing chain to break, they do wear though and it is normal practice to change them on an engine overhaul. It pays to keep an eye on tensioners, (automatic as well as manual types).

The only real advantage to a belt, is that it has less inertia and doesn't need any lubrication, apart from the fact that it must be far cheaper for the manufacturers!

Be very careful with the timing chain on these engine, as above, specifically the tensioner. They are known to fail and VW have even revised the design. The tensioner in my sister's car recently went and the chain slipped badly enough to bend valves and loose compression on all cylinders. When researching the issue it is clear that this is a common occurrence. Personally I would get the revised chain and tensioner kit and sort it/get it sorted as soon as you can - budget etc allowing.

The have heard the tensioner is hydraulically pressured - so at a minimum, look after your oil.
