Co-op Young Drivers Insurance

Featured Replies

Well I'm hunting around for another car and comparing insurance prices to see what I can afford to insure...

I found that the co-op young drivers insurance is good prices even for a 1.4 6n.. at £2100 fully comp where as I would be looking at like £3700 fully comp with comparison sites :o

BUT they fit a "SmartBox" to your car that tracks with GPS, your speed, braking hardness, cornering speed and I suppose driving times and length. This all tracks your driving style and can raise or lower the premium depending on how you drive your car!

From the date of installation, we will use the Smartbox to capture data from your vehicle including time, date, location, distance travelled, speed of vehicle, acceleration and deceleration and time spent idle. An electronic data feed will translate the GPS co-ordinates from the box into a specific location which will provide detail regarding road type, road surface and speed limit of the road you are driving on at any specific time. This information will be used to build up a profile of how, where and when your vehicle is driven.

I'm wouldn't exactly be hammering all the time, throwing the car around bends but... as well all like a bit of fun/speed and go fast occasionally.

With this I don't want to have to drive like my granny just to keep the premium around £2000!

Does anyone on here have this? and is it a good idea to get cheap insurance...

Bearing in mind that its fully comp and provides Courtesy Car, Theft Tracking, Windscreen Cover

Theft Tracking, probably by the GPS black box hidden in the car, you'll know exactly where the car is providing its running/driving... easier to retrieve your car if its stolen :)

I had a similar thing with a company called Ikube. I'd try them over this as they don't monitor your driving.

This way you'll end up paying loads more on top come end of your twelve months driving just because you went out for a blaze once a week on backroads..

"Happy to get a discount for not driving between 11pm and 5am?"

What happens if I work nights and NEED to drive within those times?

Never mind found it..

"If you do drive during 11pm and 5am you will still be fully insured but you will be charged £100 per night"

Since I do occasionally work some nights a week, I can't see benefits in being charged more than I am being paid for that night just to drive to/from work!

You never stated that in the O.P..

Also, it was £45 when I had it, and, I've heard many ways of getting around it.

ie: driving at those times without getting charged. :ninja:

The times of driving was irrelevant to what I was talking about in the O.P... So I didn't feel the need to state the times when I would need to drive.

I'm sure there are a many ways to get around the restrictions etc set by these boxes/trackers fitted to the cars but TBH is it worth the hassle if you are at risk of being caught? But then I suppose its like speeding is that worth it with the risk of being caught lol

At the moment it looks like this co-op young driver would be the best option for me as long as I keep the driving sensible... its £1898 fully comp /year

Where as looking at comparison sites for the same cover on the same car it was £2390 cheapest... I could go third party and save me from the "SmartBox" and it would be around £2000.

BUT then again if I keep the driving sensible throughout my years with co-op maybe the premium could drop a few hundred and I'd save even more...

Building the no-claims and proof of being a carefull driver as all data from the SmartBox is logged and stored online and can be viewed any time...

Which could then eventually drop my insurance costs a bit more once I 'upgrade' and get a bigger engined car :D

if i were you i'd stump up the extra few dollars and be able to do what i want on the roads.

i've heard the co-op one not only tracks you and fines you for speeding, but also for rough cornering, harsh braking and overzealous acceleration....

i can only see this very invasive piece of technology being a bastard in the end. there's no way i'd want to be tracked every second i'm driving, it'd just feel crap!!

just refit the box in your grannys car

lol none of my family drive well enough to fit it in their car

Plus I decided not to go with it since I've decided not to get a 6n and go for a mk3 coupe 1.0.. its only 1600 Third Party Fire/Theft.. or 2100 for fully comp.

And they won't insure a car that old on their policy.. I think it has to be after 1994 as I tried a 1994 coupe and still would't insure it, due to vehicle age..

Plus to be honest there's not enough of a saving to cover what they can see... They know everything about your car and where it is at what time/date, how fast you go and on what roads, your cornering speed. how fast you accelerate or brake :o

Damn if I did have that sort of info sent to the insurance company I'd want fully comp for like £500 or less  whether I was just past my test or not!

The boxes are quite easy to disconnect. Not that I'm advising it, but just so you are aware.

Yea I did think of that, just unplug it or whatever but wouldn't they have some failsafe method of knowing you unplugged it?

I'm sure they'd know people would try to bypass it and install something like an internal battery or like above a method of telling them that it has been disabled in some way?...

try admiral or elephant.com, i had a licence revoke and still got insured on a 1.0l mk3 for £553

10month policy with £1000 excess, but then paid £53 excess cover.

just got insurance from admiral for 10 months full comp with two names drivers on a mk2f polo 1.3 coupe cl

the cost was £1928.06 and is with the car being on the street and £500 excess

just to let people know if your try a quote with the car in garage, drive, and street it will be cheaper having the car parked on the street i found it would be £200 different between garage and the street

and just to let you know too I'm 18 and only had my license for 8 months today

Gaz, Elephant and Admiral were the cheapest two for me aswell.

I got 1890 third party, without any named drivers, 300 excess, parked on private property..

was about 2100 fully comp for the same as above..

Adding my mum and dad, who have been driving for 5 (mum) and 17 (dad) years.. I'm sure I could get fully comp for about 1800-1900.

I live in a crap area for insurance though, too many nutters are crashing and writing cars off around here.. making it a bad area :(

Youd think that, but no. I kube, we used to d/c the power then unplug the aerial. when plugging it back in youd just go to where you unplugged, plug the aerial, then the power.

haha, you drove 0 miles this year, you owe us £21.75

Just plug it in when you have family in the car  That way you'd be driving more carefully and slower :)

or when you are low on fuel and have to take it a bit more slowly to get more out of what's left before filling up

As it says it depends on your accelleration and braking, what if you have to accelerate hard to get onto a busy road or if someone pulls out in front of you and have to slam on the brakes? thats gonna put it up a little?

try confused.com, i just got a quote for a valver, 0 ncb, 21yr old with my mum and grandad on policy....1100 with coilovers. same details with compare the market was 1300 and 2k with gocompare. its weird :S but worth a try :)

also a mate of mine has 0 ncb, is 18 and is insured on a mk4 golf 1.8 turbo for 1300 a year with confused..

I've just got this in my Polo and it isn't the end of the world. Just stick to the speed limit and don't fly around corners and you'd be fine! You have an online dashboard which tells you your score for the day. This goes from very poor, poor, standard, good and then excellent. My score at the moment is 'excellent' on everything bar acceleration which is 'good' and I mean I don't drive around like a granny. The fact also that it acts as a tracker in case your car is stolen is an added bonus. Its worth it for £1300 for the year!

so will you get penalised for being good? or just poor.

so will you get penalised for being good? or just poor.

You only get penalised if it drops below standard! So if I keep on track my premium should go down. Like I say it ain't a bad system. The box they put in is tiny too.

I'm guessing they use a simple G-meter of some sort?

put the box in a bag and into bowl of water when driving, 8-)

And I'm sure when you disconnect the box at night you wont be insured when you crash....

eff that.

eff that.

this

My mate still got a payout with i-kube despite him having no mot or tracker plugged in. Wouldnt risk it personally, but its worth baring in mind.
