hi guys been a while since i posted been far to busy with the family. I'm sad to say that I'm selling my polo due to having 2 kids and 1 on the way sadly i had to updrade to a family estate. I've got a few cosmetic things to sort out on the old girl. 1st i had a potential buyer come round the other daty to look over the car. He really liked the look of the car but 3 key things left him down. When shifting from 1st to 2nd you hear a loud banging nosie coming from the gearbox. Like it chucking it self into 2nd gear. This is the only time through the gear changes that it makes this sound. The bloke suggested that my Torque Converter had gone. Hence the thud chaning from 1st to 2nd.

2nd Central locking. I went to a breakers to buy a new Central locking pump only cost £10 normally they cost £30 so very happy and exicted about getting it fixed. But sadly no u can feel the pump sucking in air to pull the locks down and pushing air out to unlock the locks. ( I've just had both barrells replaced in drivers and passanger side) I've been lookin around and came across two things 1 might be a dead micro chip <<not sure where and what that is and the 2nd is the vaccaum has gone completey in the pipes mabey ??? its locking the petrol cap but not releasing the petrol cap. any info on a fix and parts much appricated.

and last but not least. the passanger window wont go down. it broke a while ago. what had happend the metal wire that runs around the regulator got caught and snapped. Can i just buy a left side regulator repair kit off ebay. or do i need a whole new regulator. again much appriacted.

Its on the way to the garage 2morrow. so wanna mabey orger the parts and get my loclal mechanic to fix the problems. that way only gotta pay for labour.

Unless the torque converter is loose on its mountings, or that the 'one-way-clutch' is faulty, I wouldn't think that it is the cause of the a banging noise, also if it were the T.C., you would think that you would get the problem on all changes. I would tend to think that (providing that the banging IS coming from the gearbox) you have a case of lack of adjustment. Has it been serviced correctly?

If you are sure that the central locking pump works, it might be worth listening for air/vacuum leaks, the convoluted connections on the door pillars are a good place to start.

advice taken and thank you for you are reply. In regards to your comments yes it sound like the banging from 1st to 2nd is comin from the gearbox.

the previous owner which is a family friend (old lady) said they had a new gearbox fitted. this i do not no when or at what milliage the work was done . no recipt :( As for servicing. The engine I've always kept that serviced but not so much the gearbox. I got the car at 64k its now at 93k. I've never changed the auto trans fluid mabey that would be a start i suppose. the car is still drivable just that nasty shunt from 1st to 2nd

and in regards to CLP if u use your hand to manually unlock the filler cap u can feel the air going to it to try and release the lock. mabey theres a leak in the vaccaum hmmmmm how easy that to repair and parts wise :(

If I remember correctly, there is no requirement for changing the ATF, but the box adjustments do need to be checked, not really a DiY job unless you know your way around it and have access to the required equipment.

With regards to the C/L, it sounds as if you have located the problem to be a leak on the fuel flap positioner, your main problem in working in that area is in avoiding all the bits of sharp metal that live in that area. If you lift out the C/L pump (it just sits in a bit of insulating material) you CAN get at it, but life is much easier if you remove the O/S rear light cluster as well.
