Also, greenpeace are selective mother-nice peoples. There was protests in Glasgow against cutting down tree's to build the new motorway but was there protests against cutting down tree's so people could get a better view at the Pope? NOPE.

Don`t complain about all the trees that have to get cut down to make the paper for their protest placards or all the pollutants created in making the plastics for their signs or the shitload of fuel and masive amount of pollutants their un-filtered ships burn chugging around the oceans looking for people to argue with.

Biggest pile of crap ever! They're just making false accusations against VW and just bringing in facts that have nothing to do with VW as a company. E.g. "Volkswagen says it wants to be “the most eco-friendly automaker in the world”, but only 6% of the cars it sold in 2010 were its most efficient models. It has the technology to do better." This isn't to do with the cars that VW make. It's just a customer preference.

Now you have the flawed argument. What concern would green peace have with P&G? P&G aren't lobbying about anything related to emissions, which is the point of the green peace argument here.

I'm sure it's targeted at the VW Group, not the one brand, and it's sales weighted.

Ferrari and Dodge are part of Fiat - most of the cars that group sells are city cars

Chevrolet is part of GM - again, the bulk of GM's sales are fairly efficient small cars and actually most Chevys globally are rebadged Daewoos (small cars)

Conversely, Volkswagen as a group includes Bentley, Lamborghini and Bugatti. But likewise most of what they sell will be reasonably economical family cars.

I'm not saying Greenpeace is correct by the way. There are worse performing manufacturers out there. Jaguar/Land Rover and Subaru don't rate too highly in terms of CO2 emissions either.

It's complete toss isn't it. The terminology they use is so loose. Such as saying Volkswagen is the most polluting manufacturer in Europe - yes, it's also the biggest European manufacturer by volume.

And the "only 6% are the most efficient vehicles" thing is a bit loose too. Would that figure change if VW slapped the Bluemotion badge on their biggest sellers? Also, what percentage are made up of their least efficient vehicles? IIRC Golf GTI/Golf R sales make up a tiny percentage of the Golf's sales figure, and I'd imagine in terms of sales volume that Bugatti/Bentley/Lamborghini are tiny compared to VW/Skoda/Audi/SEAT.

The other thing is - nowadays you'll find the Bluemotion badge is spreading across the range as they introduce the innovations of their most economical models elsewhere. Hence you can now buy Bluemotion Technology variants. So they are actively working on bringing their equivalent of Merc's BlueEfficiency and BMW's EfficientDynamics into the range.

Incidentally, you can now by a Mercedes-Benz E500 BlueEfficiency. It's an E-Class with a 4.6-litre bi-turbo V8. That seems to have escaped their attention a little - after all, does the BlueEfficiency badge mean that's "one of Merc's most efficient cars"? Volkswagen doesn't slap the Bluemotion badge on inefficient petrols.

I've not read the report in a while but I also remember Toyota coming up as exemplary. Toyota in the UK sells mostly small hatchbacks and hybrids, and its most powerful car is a diesel Auris. Size up to a Lexus and I believe just over half are hybrids, which brings the CO2 figure down.

But some headline figures:

Volkswagen's sales-weighted CO2 average improved 7.7% last year

Audi's improved by 4.87%

SEAT's improved by 8.44%

Skoda's improved by 2.37%

All of the VW Group's largest-selling brands, bar Audi, are in the top ten for low CO2 emissions. Ford and GM (Vauxhall and Chevy) are further down the list. Toyota, at the top, doesn't have anything remotely sporty on sale at the moment. Fiat, MINI, Citroen, Hyundai and Peugeot all specialise in superminis.

At 7.7%, Volkswagen itself recorded the fourth biggest drop in CO2 emissions last year. The brands that beat it were Alfa Romeo (which released MiTO and Giulietta recently, but traditionally has had a much worse average than VW), Nissan (not sure what's led that) and Lexus (which is recording an increasing share of its sales in lower CO2 hybrids).

Hopefully there's some interesting stuff in there.

I'm not even going to entertain clicking the link to the website, the less traffic the better. But, i'm running on the assumption that they're being very fixated on CO2, nowadays the only pollutant seemingly worth talking about.

They no doubt will have completely ignored the advances the VW group made decades ago in cleaning up the production process (where most pollution from the motorcar comes from in its' first 10 years) as well as having catalysts fitted to cars sold in Europe long before legislation actually required it etc etc. I could go on, but when Autocar audited manufacturers in the early 1990's which looked at all pollution (not just CO2) VW group came out on top overall. This was for things which we would now take for granted (removing ozone from all processes) but which other big manufacturers were still partaking in.

We need to look more towards the manufacturing process with regards to pollution. How much energy does it take to make a Prius with all them batteries?

I hope the VW leagal team is swinging in to action!
