Had a look on google and dont look like its been done enough people have asked questions though

And aing 1.4 valvers a tight enough squeeze?

you'd need to get the angle grinder out for sure.

Awwwwww yeaaaaaahhhhh!!

Make it fit please. Don't know of another on our soil but probably something in the motherland. They'd stuff a 1.8T in anything over there and maybe another turbo just for a laugh :-)

The thing is most people would think that that much power and weight up front in a car with very out of date suspension and steering setup would not make a very good car overall. Lots of things would need to be changed and upgraded/created to make it work to any standard but i am sure that you know this. Also the other thing is that people seem very against chopping up such a rare/old/classic car and welding things bla bla bla. I personally think you should do it and do it now. It will be silly fast..... at least in a straight line.

Will be a hella tight squeeze though. Good luck to you 8-)

You would probably get as much usable power and a better setup doing something like this though?

Bronzey turbo

Although the new owner of this car has removed/sold this engine iirc so they might be trying to shoehorn a 1.8T in one as well.

I'm a loser.

I think it would be awesome. But i also think it would be massive overkill.

Modded G40 in a MK1 would probably kill one with a 1.8t in. as ud still be spinning up when the G would be going for 3rd

Some inspiration for you!

Need 4WD

^^^^ EPIC

only 1.8t in the uk is in the back if your on about the 20v

so youed be the 1st

plenty of info on it in forums you just need to speak german tommi

I'm considering a 2.0 16v for mine, having found a simple suspension replacement that does away with using the chassis legs. Now able to chop the legs and still have better suspension/rigidity than factory,i have far more options.

Could even do a flip-front.. covering an R32 lump. Probably wont bother, but it does enable me to see the ease in which a 1.8T can be done (if you can be bothered with the electrics).

theres a reason no-ones done it, it will be like fitting an r1 turbo engine in an old moped, the best of luck to you sir

without either putting it in the boot, or having it 4wd, put simply, you will die.

haha, a mk1 polo with any more than 200bhp on standard drivetrain is a death wish! similar to the MI16 205's that many a 17 year old has coffined themselves with.

if you do it, please please make it 4wd with discs front and back.

I've heard that 19,764 bunny rabbits and children died last year as a result of people building the sort of cars manufacturers used to do before N-cap distributed free straight jackets to every EU household.

Anyone who's tried turning a corner in an MGB 1.8 will tell you that putting a V8 in one was a stupid idea, and what happened? The population of the country halved overnight.

Look what happened when Ford put a 1.6 turbo in a pre-subframe Fiesta. Every owner died.

You have been warned..

^^it's true I seen it

What about the classic mini scene? Pure genocide since John Cooper was stupid enough to put one of his race car engines in an Austin Seven 850 in 1961.

He also put two of hip engines in one in the 60s and then the cancer spread - people were putting V8's in them. Then in the 70s various twin cam engines, such as Lotus 1600s and Ford 1.8 16v BDA's. And then there were the turbo minis of the 80s - all with tiny standard brakes, and the owners all died.

Far better to drive standard cars with airbags and ABS - after all, nobody dies, every year,in this country,in them!

Haha this is very true but coming from you Mikey who can stick anything into a mk2 sort of contradicts yourself lol if he gets the safety aspect sorted then it will be fine but if he just stick. 1.8t lump into the shell it will death.

Why have i contradicted myself? I've been running at least double stock power since '05 and still have 239mm front discs, same pads and no servo.

And look,I'm mourned regularly..

your mk2 isn't as old, it didn't come with an 895cc engine as standard, it doesn't have 1800cc, it doesn't have a turbo, the engine didn't come out of a modern vw golf or audi, your engine isn't as hard to fit due to engine size, mounts or electronics and your mk2 is bigger than a mk1 thus making it more stable and able to handle more weight/power

i just hope this guy has enough money/talent/time to do this and he uses 4wd and most likely mounts it in the middle/rear like the m2f that has a 1.8t in it

The MK1 is little different, you only save a few kilos, its the same car re-skinned. And no i haven't taken it to the next level but plenty have - there are loads of MK1s with highly tuned G40 engines producing more power than standard 1.8T's and they're doing fine.

Like all the VR6/1.8T MK1 Golfs let alone minis with V8s..

I'm sure there are plenty riders of fast bikes who dont know what they're doing, people building Subaru based kit cars who couldn't fix a washing machine, and cowboy garages who dont torque up the rusty bolts after fitting new brake pads correctly because said bolts have rusty rounded off heads. Etc.

But traffic all moves at similar speeds generally, and its more commonly the stock 1.4i Megane that spreads itself across half a dual carriageway. Not the car's fault,it had the brakes, just the owner was on another planet at the time. Probably the one in the sat-nav.

Of course work has to be carried out properly. But the modern mentality we're brainwashed with, that 200bhp in an old car means death? That's like suggesting a ten year old using a samurai sword to cut a piece of cheese in half is gonna cut his arm off. Well no actually,he wont. If he's capable of cutting a piece of cheese, then he'll manage. And if he's using a samurai sword then he's gonna be paying attention to what he's doing - id suggest a three inch steak knife is gonna be more dangerous when used with the usual complacency.

Unless his parents are a patronizing pair of sheep and never give him the chance to develop such a skill, leaving him to use only pre-sliced cheese and consequently see him paper-cut himself turning the page of a book one day because he was never allowed to learn to respect dangers..

One more thing - i hope the 1.8T engine is not gonna be 4wd because that'd make the car faster accelerating in the wet. More importantly,i hope the engine is put in the front, because that's where the car was designed to carry one,and subsequently in the event of an accident the driver is less likely to get the engine projectile itself through his back in the event of him running into some ghost pulling out on him.

Not likely though. Someone who drives a 1.8T MK1 Polo would probably realise in the first mile why they're not likely to crash it. And anyone taking on the task, and successfully getting it running,is not gonna have used duct tape to do it.

The bloke asked for silly comments to be reserved and only offer genuine advice, and mine would be to over-engineer it.

Be of the mentality the car weighs 1200kgs and has 350bhp,because then the 200bhp in 700kgs is not gonna break it.

And dont piss about with mounting suspension off the chassis legs like VW's bodge job,put reinforcement to the front of the floor and go from that with wishbones designed for a heavier car.

i suppose... that if a person has the skill and determination to put a powerful engine in a car not designed for it, then said person is probably capable of not spinning it at the first bend.

it's all well and good putting a big engine in a little car, it's just up to the driver to take it steady.

the danger i was referring to in my first post was, for instance, when a young lad buys a 205 junior off pistonheads with an unregistered turbo'd GTI engine, only to drive it not understanding the likes of torque steer etc. and planting it into a wall.

having a fuck load of horses under your right foot is a good feeling, but personally i wouldnt feel alltogether safe if the car was a mk1 on stock suspension. i'd utterly love to see this done though.

Theres closer to the problem as i see it,and as I've considered with selling any fast modified car.

I could build a VR6 breadvan with six bike carbs and stick it on here, get me brownie points up and satisfy the fact I've been itching with the idea of building one for a while. And it'd be a sound, safe motor.

But then i go to my local french car breakers looking for parts for a friends car,and the place is full of crashed VTS's. They all had rear discs,btw..

So do i wanna put a VR6 breadvan in the classifieds? Hell no.

Yet my cousin restored his modified MK1 Escort RS2000 in his early 20s. They said he'd kill himself in it,but its still mint several years later. Because its his baby,he has the respect.

And with what its taught him,he has the respect for his dads Lotus Cortina and E30 M3 too.

A 1.8T MK1 Polo can only be dangerous if someone of the wrong mentality is driving, imo.

Very very true i see what your getting at.

But this would be a great build but needs the time and attention it deserves.

Wish i still had the time for such projects myself, but family life eventually got me and that's even more a time consuming business..

I told the mrs i was puttin mooneyes on the pushchair wheels, she wasn't impressed

Anyway,to finally answer the question to the topic I've jibbed in so much.. I dunno lol

There's been a 1.8T MK2 coupe though, engine in the front yet going down the quarter mile at serious pace.

If it can be done in a mk2, there's no reason it wouldn't work for a mk1.

The only thing is that the nose of a mk1 is a heck of a lot shorter than a mk2/3, to the point where a G40 won't fit unless the front panel is cut for charger access. Sure it's do-able, and would make hell of a weapon - I do hope your mk1 is structurally good and you're on to a winner.

i dont think he needs any advice he seems pretty confident in his first post, i wish you luck. dont drive like a idiot and I'm sure youll live.
