MK2 1.3 Engine Tuning

Featured Replies

Hiya,

i've got a mk2 coupe s parade 1.3 carb with 55bhp iirc. And tbh its painfully slow  I was going to do an engine swap to abd or afh, but after some thinking it seems the insurance company would rape me on premiums :-( So is there any way to tune the stock engine to make it quicker? I've heard a golf head would fit but don't know specifics except that it needs to be carb as injection heads won't fit? Anything else?

weber with a gk inlet manifold or bike carbs

gt cam...would need a elec fuel pump

twin downpipe and manifold or 421 stainless jobbie

heads are all the same ..you could get yours ported though

injection heads do fit btw..but as above they're the same

youd still need to tell the insurance company

shouldnt be painfully slow , a good serice might be needed

Forgot to mention i'm hopefully getting some gsxr 600 carbs soon. And a service might be in order, hasn't has one for a very long time...

Also noticed theres a pipe going from the exhaust manifold to the air intake (presumably to help with cold starting). However as its now summer so no cold starts would removing this increase power?

no...

Ok so after some looking i've come up with this setup, how does it look?

intake: hks mushroom air filter mounted in high beam hole (quad grill) > 4" pipe > custom air box > gsxr 600 carbs

ported/polished head

gt cam

custom powerflow 4-2-1 exhaust

ngk iridium spark plugs

synthetic oil (haven't decided at which brand yet)

possibly skimmed head depending on how much it costs

upgraded ht leads and coil pack

all rolling road set-up

am i right in thinking this should be good for 90-100bhp

also theres a chance the head is fucked (am going to take it off next week to have a look). If it is which other heads would fit as 2g heads are difficult to find? i no you said they're all the same but looking around some wont line up the oil lines correctly?

skimmed head ..makes no differance , only do it if the head is warped

no need for uprate ign parts

100 hp sounds a bit optimistic

Skimming a head with no combustion chamber in is pointless in terms of power. Unless your head is damaged or warped then i would just leave it.

100bhp at the flywheel will be acheivable if the carbs and camshaft are set-up spot on.

Head skimming should be done with the gas flowing/porting if done by a reputable company, if it is needed

Although the ing parts wont really give more power, the probably worth replacing so that they are working to their optimum, no need for fancy stuff just good quality oem

I would get a decent cam in there, rather than the GT one and a vernier, to enable a decent set up.

Question you have to ask yourself then though, is the cost for all of this (unless your doing the porting work, but that's another issue) is £ for bhp, when a 16v conversion will be similar money and be more powerful

so you plan to do all this and not mention it to the insurance then?

No but the increase in premiums is lower if i just tune the stock engine, rather than swap engines. I'll still tell the insurance company about everything (allthough not sure how theyd check porting and gt cam lol).
