hi guys got a question for you, my car seems to use alot of oil, and recently has started to stall when i take my foot of the accelerator, or when the revs go down to idle,

i took a short journey yesterday to the petrol garage and it cut out on me 10 times in the space of a five min journey, i poped the bonnet and noticed the breather pipe that connects to the air filter housing was collapsing and it was full of gunk and oil, so i disconnected it from the air filter housing side and it didnt cut out on me at all after that,

so my question is can this cause stalling?

also I've noticed smoke coming out of the pipe, could the smoke be oil burning and causing the car out cut out because its the air used to make up the air/fuel ratio in the cylinder?

if i need to change the pipe any one got a part number? or is that the least of my worries as i hope my rings aint going? the car temp is normall running temp and I've got no smoke coming out the exhaust and the exspansion tank has no signs of oil. its done 820000 miles

smoke comes from the breather because as it says its a breather pipe for the oil its more like warm oil fumes. Best bet is to take the pipe off and clean it out flush the crap out as it may be blocked. you can buy Independent oil breather filters as not to recirculate the crap coming from it through your panel filter.

ill take it aprt now then and clean it out with some hot water, ill look online for a filter to put on it, ill measure the pipe to see what kind of filter size i need.

do u think this is what is causing the stalling?

just took the pipe out its full of gunk is this normall

its normal-ish , mine was like that not as bad, just years worth of crap building up mate, give it a clean and see how it goes

Quite a bit of gunk in there mate. i cant say as i haven't heard of it before but I'm sure if it isnt able to release pressure through the breather it will build up and probably cause whats happened in your case.

its all cleaned out now ill trial and error it for a few days and get the filter for it thanks for you are help guys.

Also how easy was it too remove that? Mine could do with a clean and just wanted to know how you take the pipe off?

if u stick a filter on the end it will just clog up n drip oil all over ure engine....best bet is to make an oil catch can or buy one(bout £30 offa fleabay)...i think if theres loadsa smoke it could be exhaust gases meaning piton ring fail....nt possitive tho

i took the plastic cover of the engine first that is fastened down with allen key nuts then using a normall phillips screwdriver, removed the top half of the air filter housing, then you are left with the bottom half of the air filter housing, this is screwed down with two torque screws that look like a star u can can get these tools at any motor place,

when thats all unscrewed theres a screw on the air intake plastic pipe, take that off too and u should be able to remove the bottom half leaving enough room to acsess the pipe i used a really long flat head screw driver and carfully prised it off until i could get it of with my hands,

i cleaned it with warm soapy fairy liquid,

yeah i had a feeling it could be the rings

its not smoking that bad yet so il just have to monitor it,

my old mk2 polo used to do the same thing and suck oil up into the carb from the crankcase breather. my solution was a oil catch tank. but was also told to fit a catch valve or sumink like that came standard on mk3 polos. also i used to rag mine about with a quite bad smoky breather and the cars still going strong.

tbh if i adjusted the air/fuel mixture screw the smoke got less/more cheers rob

well touch wood it hasnt broken down since I've cleaned it out I've left it disconected but I'm on the old ebay looking for a catch can, niceone people for the advice will let u know how it goes,

if rings were fried that bad it wouldnt tick over right, or run right for that matter. if you have the pipe cleanded out there shouldnt be need for a catch can, but id would be no harm either i supose best of look tho lad, il keep my fingures crossed. :)
