The Bluesmobile!

Featured Replies

Thought I may as well stick up a thread seeing as I've been on here a good while and got to know a lot of you now :-D

Here is my mk1 Golf Driver, my first car bought in 2004, and it will also be my last car  I will die in this car :-D

The reason its called "The Bluesmobile" is cos it has a black and white theme going on like the Blues Brothers car, plus I love that film 8-)

There's too many pictures for me to be arsed copying all the links over from E38 so I'll just skim past the boring ones and just show the less boring ones  Kind of like a timeline since I first got my hands on it. You can see it gradually become lower and lower in the pictures as the years go by and the urge to be the lowest gets worse

How it was when I bought it

After a couple of years ended up like this

Another few months and I decided to bite the bullet and get the welding done and a respray, so, stripped;

Then, after having numerous problems with the original engine, I was offered a 3F bottom end off a mate which I could mate to a Polo Coupe S head I randomly had lying around, but decided to smooth the engine bay before fitting the new engine.

Photobucket is being an utter bastard right now so there might be a delay till I post up the rest

OMG that's like when a porn film stops buffering in the middle of a quickie!

Hurry up and get the rest or the pics up! 8-)

Mk1 golfs always seem to do it for me, looks like youve put a lot of work in to it as well, looks cool bud.

It's looking good man keep up the work

Few months later I decided to try my hand at wrapping something in carbon. Being my stupid impatient self I decided to try doing my dash rather than do something simple to start

As I'd got rid of the heater I smoothed off the heater vents on the dash, along with the glovebox

DSC03138.jpg

Due to impatience, lack of planning, and jumping in above my head, it turned out shit  But I still fitted it anyway and it still looked shit. But at the time I thought it was good

DSC03184.jpg

Then went on to do the door cappings, which also turned out shit for the same reasons, but were better than the dash

True story haha!

And I've already seen the finished product.

Carbon stuff is immense.

Late 2008 I got hold of some new wheels off German Ebay, which finally arrived after about 4 months of thinking I'd been ripped off

DSC03308.jpg

8x13" and 10x13" PLS Hockenheims off an Opel Manta

DSC03310.jpg

Dunno how the fuck I expected them to fit

DSC03300.jpg

Split, polished, powdercoated, and rebuilt

DSC03333.jpg

DSC03322.jpg

DSC03324.jpg

Managed to convince my local tyre fitters to try and stretch some 195/45s onto them  They told me to come back in a couple of hours.

Came back in a couple of hours to find...

DSC03341.jpg

:lol::lol::lol: BUZZIN.

Banged em straight on the car

DSC03359.jpg

Poked FAR too much, but at the time I thought it looked mint

DSC03357.jpg

Off they came soon after for winter 2008, replaced by chavvy 15s

DSC03513.jpg

Stripped down my original seats so that I could adapt the bases to fit my new buckets :-D

DSC03494.jpg

DSC03495.jpg

DSC03497.jpg

DSC03498.jpg

DSC03499.jpg

Swiftly after bolting them into the car, I did a silly and reversed past a lamppost with my door open  I was trying to watch the kerb as I parked, and due to having no wing mirror I did it with the door open. And struggling to lean out of the car with the new body hugging seats I forgot about the door...

So a replacement door was found because the original one would no longer close

DSC03514.jpg

But the replacement door was also shit so I didn't bother rushing to paint it white, and it stayed that way for 2 years!

The Coupe S/GT engine had been smoking and throwing oil out of the breather since the day I fitted it, so it was evident that the piston rings were fucked when my mate sold it to me :x I'd had enough of it eventually, so I sourced another GT engine from MrP off here, and decided to finally fit the bike carbs with the manifold my mate had given me along with the engine...

DSC03504.jpg

DSC03537.jpg

So out came the shit box and in went MrPs engine

DSC03547.jpg

DSC03560.jpg

Fuel pump wired up and carbs fitted, and the engine started up. No smoke from the exhaust, no oil coming from the breather 8-)8-)8-) Massive thanks to MrP

Had it set up at Bogg Bros

DSC03727.jpg

DSC03728.jpg

After that it purred like a kitten and in hindsight was the best engine I've ever had 8-)

Until one day on the motorway I heard a funny noise. Pulled into a service station for a piss and when I returned to the car and turned the ignition... And nothng... The engine wouldn't turn over at all. I thought it was a flat battery, but after numerous embarrassing failed bump starts, it was clear that the engine was locked solid. I thought "That bastard MrP has sold me a shit engine thats seized" lol, and how wrong I was

Got the car towed home and took the head off for a gander...

DSC03638.jpg

It was then apparant that a bolt had been sucked through the carbs and locked the piston against the head! It was one of the little tiny bolts that hold the velocity stacks to the ends of the carbs. But because I only had two stacks I had removed them all and tightened the bolts back in. Even if I had been running filters this still could have happened because the bolts were located inside the carb throat  Lesson learnt and the rest of the bolts removed.

For christmas I was given a MIG welder, and whilst the car was immobile I decided to get a bit of practice.

Made a lower strut brace using parts of an old one my mate gave me. They usually only fit the large block Golfs because the exhaust on the small blocks is in the way, so I made one that cleared it.

DSC03623.jpg

Bolted the ends of the old brace in place, and cut and shaped the new brace so it fitted tightly in place

DSC03625.jpg

Tacked in place and removed for welding

Then I randomly won an award for "Best Stance" at the DubClub MegaMeet in Coventry, fuck knows how as the stance was shit  But the prize was £100 to spend with PureKlas, so whilst the PLSs were off the car for winter I decided to get the front dishes polished as they had become shit.

They came back mint!

DSC03658.jpg

DSC03657.jpg

Then I decided to get my carbon fibre-ing on again to make some centre caps as it looked a bit bare without any

Got some aerosol caps that fitted in the wheel centre bore

DSC03675.jpg

Wrapped some carbon over em and held it in place with an elastic band

DSC03665.jpg

Threw some resin at them

DSC03672.jpg

Dried, sanded, trimmed and polished

DSC03674.jpg

Fitted perfectly and finished off the wheels nicely 8-)

DSC03681.jpg

DSC03678.jpg

DSC03676.jpg

Back on the car

DSC03709.jpg

I decided that I no longer like he poke on the wheels so I fixed the GTI arch trims further down the arches to cover up the wheels more, and it improved it loads

DSC03694.jpg

To replace the bolted induced engine failure engine I sourced an ABD from a breakers in Oldham, and wang'd that in to get me mobile again.

Couple of months later into 2009 I started to get cocky with my welder and decided to raise the front turrets on the car, partly to go lower, but mainly to stop the car crashing about over bumps, because the coilovers were sat on the bumpstops

After chatting about it with my mate, we arrived at an idea to use a turret from another mk1, and weld it on top of the existing turret, that way it'll be raised, yet original top mounts can be used. Off to Leeds to cut the turrets out of some lads mk1 he was breaking!

DSC03819.jpg

DSC03821.jpg

New turret in place

DSC03822.jpg

tacked

DSC03823.jpg

Welded

DSC03824.jpg

Copy and pasted onto the other side

DSC03840.jpg

Acheived a lovely gash whilst cleaning the welded area, from a wire knot wheel attached to a grinder. Caught my sleeve during an awkward position and ripped some skin off

DSC03833.jpg

Strapped that shit up with kitchen roll and duct tape and continued on my way. Couldn't let that nice person stop me finishing this :x

DSC03830.jpg

Painted

DSC03844.jpg

Car sat nice and low, tucking tyre 8-)

DSC03849.jpg

DSC03850.jpg

Took it for a drive and it was totally transformed! Absorbed bumps properly and the car felt more in control 8-)

Later into 2009 after a few months enjoying the raised turrets I decided I no longer wanted so much poke on the rear, so I sourced a ream beam to narrow and replace mine with :-D

Found one

DSC01533.jpg

Cut off the stub axle mount

DSC01536.jpg

Cut away an inch of trailing arm and tacked stub axle plate back on

DSC01537.jpg

DSC01551.jpg

DSC01552.jpg

Welded

DSC01560.jpg

DSC01558.jpg

Due to the width of the wheels I had to notch the trailing arm to stop the inner rim rubing against it

DSC01570.jpg

Gave the insides of the trailing arms some bracing to stop the shape collapsing

DSC01567.jpg

DSC01572.jpg

DSC01575.jpg

But I was still worried about the notch I had cut out for the inner rims. After a chat with the electrician who happened to be working at my dads house at the time, he gave me an idea how to strengthen the trailing arm again

DSC01576.jpg

DSC01577.jpg

DSC01579.jpg

DSC01582.jpg

Done and painted

DSC01587.jpg

Look where the wheel sat with it fitted :lol::lol:

DSC01590.jpg

DSC01591.jpg

Too much tuck! So fitted some 15mm stub axle spacers on until I could find some suitable tyres to fill that gap

Took some pics with my mates missus' newly acquired standard mk1

DSC00035.jpg

DSC00036.jpg

DSC00029.jpg

DSC00031.jpg

Had to notch the drivers side chassis leg too because the increase suspension travel on the front meant the driveshaft was knocking against it

DSC01602.jpg

Also, the Kirket buckets were vibrating me to peices so I decided to make some damped mounts for them using a pair of old bump stops and exhaust clamps :-D

DSC00047.jpg

DSC00054.jpg

DSC00053.jpg

Solved the constant vibration problem, but the seats still jolt you quite bad

New steering wheel given to me by a mate

DSC00097.jpg

Also, I was fed up of the constant air leaks and shite running of the engine using the carb manifold my mate gave me, so I went about adapting it to use the bike mounting rubbers

Drew up a flange

DSC00068.jpg

Had it cut, and welded it to the existing manifold flanges

DSC00069.jpg

DSC00071.jpg

With the rubbers bolted on

DSC00072.jpg

Completely solved the air leaks, and stopped the carbs falling off mid driving like what happened numerous times with the rubber hoses. 8-)

Winter 2009 and the snow arrived

i've seen this for a while on ed38 but not recently, i can remember one pic of this epic so i had it as my desktop!

alot of mk1's are too clean and too smoothed, i love how this looks

boom found it:

just to add, this is damn low.
