been on here a while now and had the loon a while so think i better get a few pictures up.... a few of you know me but i've not realy been on here much

i picked up the loon from ryan2 on here after a 4 hour drive to ipswich....an 8 hour round trip for a polo

it's got around 57k miles with full service history

i got alot of stick from EVERYONE when i first brought the slut back into shrewsbury..... but the comments changed ALOT when she got to how she looks now

Long term (very long) I've got some big things planned including full engine conversion and pretty much rebuilding the car from the ground up with new and refurbished parts....but for now due to limited time space an money, I'll just be playing with it occasionally and making it look respectable untill major work starts

so the first couple of things i sorted was......

- removing the bumpstrips along the sides of the loon.......

-replacing the orange side repeaters and front indicators with smoked ones.......

-and i had some 6n steels off a friend and fitted them with some low profile tyres so that i could lower the loon ready for when i found some alloys i liked

so the next job on the list was to hit the deck ;D

with the help of some 80/80 philj shocks and springs, I've got some 10mm lowering top caps for the front but I won't be fitting them untill some arch work is done

next on the wanted list was a new exhaust to replace the rusty old blower..... i wanted something that obviously wasnt chavvy looking or sounding but its hard to know what an exhaust will sound like untill its on a car so i went for a powerflow as i could decide the look and sound of it.... i went for raspy old skool sound.... the fella at powerflow couldnt understand me when i said i didnt want a tip from the back box i just wanted the 2" pipe to carry on but it came out exactly as i wanted it after a bit of explaining

I picked up some 13x6 alleycat rallye specials from a lad at ultimate dubs 2010 after scraping over the ridiculously big speedbumps into the overflow car park.... so I made my girlfriend walk alongside the car on the way out of the show, didn't scrub on the way out....fat heffa

I fitted the alleycats and unfortunately couldn't drive the car at all as the rear scrubbed as soon as it moved...so they had to come off again along with the rear shocks and springs

Arch gap looks good but not much good when it won't move

Shocks and springs had to go back on and off twice but got there eventualy...

Bigger arch gap but at least it moves now...

All done....

all sorts of win! need more of these threads not endless 17's year olds with 6n's hahaha

you got a backbox then or just the 2" straight through from the centre box? how loud is it as it is?

ha, cheers dood... it's not going to be much of a thread to start with as i've just been tarting it up untill i can afford to realy get busy on it

its 2" stainless pipe from the downpipe back with a backbox hidden then 2" pipe straight from the backbox to the exit.....you can see the backbox in one of the pictures where I'm adjusting the rear shocks.....yeah its pretty loud but not like "oh my god it sounds like a tractor", its just realy raspy and hopefully even more raspy when i get a manifold and bike carbs :)

nice thats a fairly small box that, i'm just wondering as i might do away with my backbox but keep the centrebox and cat on my mk3 and i don't want to annoy the neighbors too much

and to be honest thats job done for me maybe a few refinements needed though but you do that over time

Being a mk3 surely you don't need a cat unless it's a late model...I'm not sure what the sound will be like with that choice of setup but try it anyway...don't worry about the neighbours...most decent exhausts can be as quite as you like if you drive sensibly untill your out of your street before you start making it pop.lol....that's why I'm so happy with mine because it's not a chavvy sound at all and last thing I'd want is something noisey boy racer like

Cheers mate, it's looking a bit rough around the edges now due to sitting for 12 months but nothing a good clean and a bit of paint won't fix

The next job was to give the alleycats a couple coats of paint before deva dubs 2010... as I've said I'm just tarting up the loon for now untill I can afford to spend alot for new wheels, respray ect....

I was recommended this stuff called nitromooores from b&q....you just spread it on with a brush an watch it work :) was pretty cool to watch....

And the results...

Because of the shape of the wheels they were such a ballache to work with....trying to get the thick paint out of each spoke area was a nightmare

But I got there eventualy........sort of

So I masked the polished dishes and the tyres.....

A bit over the top with the masking but better safe than sorry

Here's a few pictures from deva dubs 2010 the week after I sprayed the wheels up

The Saturday night of deva 2010 was a bit of a nightmare.... Being from shrewsbury me and the wench thought we'd get a kfc and sit in the carpark in town watchin the campers and beetles drive past.....

I tried to start the polo to drive home and tuck her away for the night ready for Sunday's "show n shine"...turned the key and nothing happened at all....sounded like a flat battery so my dad came and jumped me to get her home.....

So in a rush I went and bought a new battery..... Then drove to quick fit for them to test the problem.....it was the alternator which I later found was completely covered in oil dripping from the head gasket

This was the point that I decided to take her off the road and keep her as what she was meant for in the first place....a project car

oh dear :( mines weeping in the same place... not going to be pretty, like the progress, sounds like we're doing the same sort of thing, tarting up then when money and time allows the bigger jobs! Will be watching this, I've got to do my body work this summer.. and i should really do my head gasket for peace of mind i suppose, let me know how you get on!

Do you have a thread aswel mate?? Get going on the head and get it out of the way dood, makes you feel good when you can happily turn the key again :) I've sorted the gasket now and she's running again just not on the road so still not moving anywhere.. I'll get the last few piks up from sorting the engine but that's as far as I've got... I thought i'd get all of this up and get a thread started so that it's here ready for me to update as like you said I'm gonna get going properly on her this summer

Yeah thing is i need it at the moment and got next to no money, want to take her to the polo show at the end of the month then maybe after that i'll crack on.. better to do it now before the head gets damaged.. how come she's still off the road? yeah, roll on the not so sunny weather!

I'll check it out now.....the post I'm about to put up explains why it's still off the road....although I am ready to put it back on the road but I need to find some cheap classic insurance as I don't want to run it as my daily car so I'd need to run two insurance policies

Haha...thats not the cleverest idea....

Thats why it took me so long coz of all the previous coats other people had applied

Looks really good on the red wheels.

Due to me being....a) a skint apprentice......b) a lazy bastard .....and c) made redundant two weeks after finishing my apprenticeship and taking a pretty much 50% wage cut.... The polo sat on the drive outside my house for near 12 months through the winter untill this spring

Quick one of how she looked in the winter....the snow got alot thicker before I cleared it off....(hense the lazy bastard bit)

When I got round to buying all the components to refurb the head me and a friend got to work on her...I didn't take many pictures of this unfortunately because I broke my digi camera and had a wank phone

Head off with the help of the haynes manual :).....

I took the head into work when they told me they were going to be making me redundant, thought I'd make the most of a bad situation. when I matched the gaskets up to the head there was only the tiniest amount of metal to be ground from the head so that didn't take long at all....I gave the ports a realy good polishing and cleaned the whole thing in the parafin wash

Threw it all back together with new gaskets and seals etc and a new alternator, gave the rocker cover and airbox a quick squirt of paint.......started on the first turn

I have all the kit to give the car a service and change the cambelt, water pump ect but I want to run it for hundred miles or so just so any shit that got into the engine will catch in the old filters and not clog the new ones that'll go on during the service

That's as far as I've got with the loon now, she's running and ready to be driven again but I'm trying to find a cheap classic insurance and somewhere to store her sO I've got space and some cover to do some more work that i've got planned
