Thinking of changing my 1.4 to a 1.6...straight swap, spoke to my insurer, its not a problem.

Ill be changing the number on the V5 also, which will change it from a 1.4 to a 1.6...does this mean the tax band will change? if so do i need to apply for a new tax disc or what, as mine says 1400cc at the minute? or do you just wait until it needs renewing? As I'm chagning it will i need an engineers report or anything like that?

don't think so, haven't been up to date on changes for the last 6 months but did a 1.8T conversion to a mk4 1.4 and after he registered it with the dvla he still pays 1.4 tax

1.4 and 1.6 are in different tax brackets so I would presume that your tax would change...how Ollys mate has got away with it i dont know but I know 90% of people dont declare their engine conversions with the DVLA as its costly and a hassle apparently!!

It's costly? I thought you just wrote the new engine number on v5 & sent it off? And surely if you don't declare it on the logbook your cars illegal and if vosa stop you and check numbers etc your fucked??

just spoke to two others i did conversions for and their tax bracket has changed so they must have mucked up the other one as he's on 1.4 tax bracket - guess he's not in a hurry to let them know though.

So how do I actually go about declaring it? It's from the sane platform car so bolts straight in, literally just longer stroke engine. also do you need a report to say it's safe or have to pay the dvla?

sometimes they just register new details and change log book, other times they require a receipt from the garage that performed the work (mainly when downsizing though)

read the direct.gov website so you are getting actual fact and not hearsay.

you will be in a higher tax band and if you declare via the dvla you will have to pay pro-rata for the remainder of your tax allowance (ie if you have 3 months left). if you dont declare and get found out they will rim-sting you in backtax for as long as they possibly can, which could be far longer than the cars actually been converted.

read up on the dvlas site, ring them up and go from there.

I believe that the DVLA will also want to know where the engine came from, and proof of purchase. I guess to make sure the engine isn't out of a stolen car or whatever.

I guess so, just print an invoice out or something, there are loads of templates on the internet.

no it would have to be a receipt, just like you would need letterheaded paper from the garage that fitted it for you, which would be a problem if you did it yourself, hence why people rarely declare it, this has come up a few times now

what about i know a garage who could write me a letter to say they did it?

DVLA will need written evidence of any changes to engine number and cylinder capacity (cc). Written evidence can be:

* a receipt for the replacement engine

* written evidence from the manufacturer

* an inspection report provided for insurance purposes

* written confirmation on headed paper from a garage if the change in engine size took place before you bought the vehicle

I have none of that for mine as i scrapped the car and cant even find the scrappage certificate now lol oh well, ignorance is bliss, mines actually gone down a tax bracket anyways, ill just pay higher tax

it says this can be a purchase receipt...the guy i think I'm getting an engine from is registering the car as being broken for spares and will do me a proper receipt? going by the dvla's guidelines this is ample information to register it as a 1.6 and then ill just have to amend my tax..happy days

How to exchange a tax disc

that says to me, you only need the supporting docs if your changing to a smaller engine? (obviously to prove your not blagging paying less tax?)

People say they often send the documents off and get a letter back asking for evidence etc...so whilst all this is going on, where do you stand with driving your car? Cause technically v5 is invalid but your doing the correct thing to get it right :s
