Next Scottish Meet.

Featured Replies

Alright there boys, bit of a sneaky one this, as am keen to attend next meet but also have major Polo issues that I've been discussing with Mattloaf down here in SW Scotland (well, on the internet really) and wanted to open up the discussion as to how best to procced to the wider tartan collective. Ignore the first bit, it's about a Calibra but I've left it in to see if any of you boys have a secret Vauxhall fetish (unlikely I know) that would cause you to have any alloys in your possession that would fit.

Alright there mate. I'll check out Scottish VAG, although the Audi is imminently going over to Ireland with my father in law who works there, as I've been offered a car I can't turn down. I used to work with someone who's younger brother died years ago, and since then she's been running his '93 Calibra as a daily driver since as it was his pride and joy, and has spent whatever required to keep it on the road. She's a hospital consultant with 3 kids so it's no longer practical for her, and I told her that I'd be happy to take it on if that ever happened. She emailed me out of the blue last week and I'm picking it up in a fortnight. It's not the sort of car i'd normally go for but it's standard, mot'd and taxed, good condtion, has the redtop XE engine (I think) and it's free! So the Audi has to go.

As for the Polo, it's fully getting on my tits. There's nothing mechanically wrong so it really needs rolling roaded to help diagnose what the issue it (I've heard there's one in Newton Stewart) Drives fine under 2000rpm but over that it's horrible . I'm currently mulling over how to proceed. Choices are: spit the dummy altogether and sell it with the running issue, spend an as yet unknown amount of money fixing it and then keep it, do same but then sell it, put it in storage until I'm no longer in the huff with it, go down the bike carb route to circumvent running issues (but suspect this will only lead to more), store it and when the Calibra inevitably crumbles into red dust put the red top from it into the Polo. Many possible routes but can't decide which to take.

Matt suggested the cylinder head as opposed to fuel probs:

It's funny you should suggest a cracked cylinder head (or head gasket failure). It's had a new fuel pump, filter, line, dizzy, rotor arm and blue temp sender and none have made any difference. However, residue on oil cap increasingly like mayonnaise, exhaust smoke not looking great and also of moisture from the exhaust. Fresh dilemma: I have a ported head (by an enthusiastic amateur, not a pro, sadly) that could go on it but then how much more money would that be? If I had the time/skills/space it would be a great project to do myself but as it is I'm not sure if I can justify further expense. Hmmmn

Any ideas/suggestions would be much appreciated. I've spent too much on it to break it but spent too mcuh on it to want to spend more. Fucking fuck sake.

i am a bit comfused by your post. i wood say its ment to be in the engine forum not the meets one coss there is no mention of a meet.

and the bit about the calibra not shore why we nead to no that but hay.

if it wos me i wood sell the calibra should get cash for it coss not meny good ones left. and spent £300 on getting a full gt engine and just drop that in.

other than that i realy dont no what you wont eny one to say because its not up to us what you do and its hard to say what is rong with the very brief description of what is rong. cood be sunit simple like a air leek.

I'll clarify; His car has been running poorly when the engine gets over ~2, 000 RPM, he has replaced the fuel pump, filter, line, dizzy, rotor arm and blue temperature sender to no avail.

Like 13kpologt said, make a thread in the Engine, Transmission and Exhaust forum, you'll get more help there.

Well it's The Polo Show at the end of this month and we usually

don't have a meet in August because of that...next meet will be

in September probably and it's way too far off to plan that tbh.

thats still not much to go on.

It's all I know I'm afraid.

Fair play, having re read the post I realise there's very little useful information in it. Thankyou Mattloaf for trying to make it a bit clearer. I just put it in the Meets section to get the opinion of people I've actually met and whose opinion I'd trust, rather than a bunch of internet expert randoms. Historically, there's loads of threads in the Engine section started by people with the same issues and I know it could be a number of things, most of which have already been replaced or checked. Realistically, I'm going to either break it and sell the bits that are worth anything or bite the bullet and get the head off and have a look. Enjoy the Polo Show.

anguse befor you take the head off i wood do a compression test that will let you no if you nead to take the head off. it will tell you if its the rings, gasket or valves..
