well to be honest mate not gonna put you off or out go for it its a good way to learn but i do an apprentiship as a mechanic and pay is shit. but other than that good way to learn and work i very realy go to college.

Oh well mate I'm not worried about pay because I'm not getting anything at the moment :-) and do you work at an independant garage or at a dealership what brand ?

In my opinion id go for an apprenticeship. When I left school I went to college for 2 years and got my certs ect. Now I'm a qualified mechanic with papers but no experience. Garages very rerely employ without experience. But how do you get experience without getting a job in a garage? If I had my time again id deff go for an apprenticeship :) But the final decision is yours my friend.

I've been to VW,ford, Vauxhall, Honda and all the little garages by me...still nowt I was talking to a guy at college and he said its the worst year this year for places taking on.

The problem us young ones have got is that no one wants to take us on and tbh i cant blame em when its nearly 400 notes a month to pay someone who will basically push a brush about and make the tea and watch the odd wheel been taken off because they arnt qualified to do anything...

apprenticeships are the way forward mate, with britain coming out of a recession there has been a major increase in apprenticeships due to the cheap laybour and people learning skills that can be carried forward into the future.

I'm currently doing an apprenticeship with an engineering firm that makes food packaging machines it covers all aspect of engineering including engineering design, cnc machine, manual machining, electronics and systems engineering. its a great way to learn new skills and earn money which can go toward a nice project of your own.

if you dont get the vdub apprenticeship then stay at getting an apprenticship because its way worth it. id say getting an apprenticeship in engineering is better than a mechanics apprenticeship because you learn more skills that allow you get get your head around the mechanics of a car as well as other machinery.

hope you do well in whatever comes your way dude even if you get you vdub apprenticship it will be a good way to learn new things and become compentent in something you wish to specialise in.

the pay isnt bad especially if you dont have a job at the moment its always something and you will apprieciate it whatever you get even if it feels like you've works your arse off for nothing, just think of what youll have in the end

I've tryed like every rail company out there and failed lol i'm to old now for most of them as they want school leavers.

I did get one a london underground but goverment cuts fucked that up so i would be on like £30k a year now but instead i'm on fuck all

Apprenticeships are the way forward even if you earn shit and get bitched around for a bit, at the end of the day your gonna have solid qualifications and experience. Really we should be thankful they offer any money atall if you wanted to do the same thing at college or uni it'd put you in grands worth of debt its been 3 years i've been trying and still no luck but i got a interview soon for an ejection seat company so hopefully all goes well

Best thing about the VW apprenticeship is the college side of it, it's at the Volkswagen national learning centre and it feels like a pretty professional set up, dealership wise it's what I imagine any apprenticeship to be like, as previously stated, pay is shit! Good look anyway mate.

I know someone who was a vw apprentice, tbh i wouldn't trust him too tie a shoe lace. Every job he did on a car he fucked up. Guess what happened too him .... he now works at audi :-D .

i started an apprenticeship at vw but they fucked me around way too much.

left and went to do motorsport engineering at college which gave me experience in things i would never get to do. getting a job in motorsport though is harder than sucking your own bellend so i went into engineering as a machinist.

much better hours, wages and working conditions and you can take the skills anywhere. cars, railway, anything that uses metal componants.

apprentships are good...I'm coming up to the end of my 3rd year now..have done it since i left school. loads of my friends did 6th form, regretted it and got fedup, gone college, fed up of having seperate jobs etc...I'm going to work fulltime as i would be college and getting paid for the privilage...was taking home £190 a week in my first year...ok so maybe the job I'm going into might only be £28k a year, but with overtime and overseas trips i can clear 50k, with no stress or worries when i go home at night.

i can also do a degree funded by the company and get a better job anyway, whereas people go 6th form, have no money, go uni, come out of uni in loads of debt, struggle to get jobs, spend years paying off the debt, have stress etc, and the fact is, a LOT of people who do degrees actually have no fucking idea about the job in hand, as they dont have the experience, id rather work my way up learning in reality, not from a website or book :)

I just had my interview at VW couple of days ago and have been accepted. I'm going for about 4 hours on Monday to see if I really like it and that's what I want to do, if so we will sign up the contract. I'm really pleased as there was other 4 candidates, but only I've been accepted.

Though I'm not sure whose saying lies, whether its some people on the forum or the service manager of VW. He said that I will have my own mentor and said that I will actually get on with things after I've been first shown how to do it, but also mentioned the cleaning side. Though he haven't said it will be as shit as some people on here are saying *confused*.

i think apprentships are a lot diff these days tbh, the days of cleaning up and being hung off cranes and making tea definately seem to be reduced due to political shit and that....

tbh as an apprentice I'm not meant to work alone as I'm technically not qualified, but i often get left to get on with things, half the time I'm just like a qualified person just not on the same pay haha :/

Modern apprenticeships are the one. If i get the one I've applied for ill be on 21k before I've even fully qualified. If i show exceptional skills i could be fast tracked towards a HNC so could be gettign a degree level education, whilst getting paid, while the company pays for the training. The joys of engineering as opposed to spannering.

Not part of our group then haha. Erm yeah they say u get a mentor and for a while u do until they realise u can make them money and expect u to do the jobs a fully qualified tech does and then chew you are arse hen u make a little mistake

I dont think id want to work in a dealership or a repair type garage IMO
