I was thinking yellow and the wheels would've worked well, but i've never seen a yellow MK2/F loon and i don't know how well it'd work.

If this MK1 is anything to go by..

Anyway, nice thread, looking forward to seeing how this comes along - btw, the weird wheel on the osf in the early pics is a MK1 Laguna wheel.

Well, i managed to get up to Barnsley a couple of months back and the car is in the later stages of paint.

I made a lot of schoolboy errors with the painting and these are showing up now with the lacquer.

Ill do some bits again and live with the rest.

Here is an assortment of pictures form the later stages - however one major issue is I sprayed the lacquer and then left if for about three weeks before I went to polish it!!!!!

I had no idea 1k acrylic goes that hard without baking. So these photos are of unpolished lacquer.

So its going to add a few days with G3/G10 before it starts getting rid of the orange peal bits I've got.

Really starting to feel like ill have a nice car now.

Gutted it wasnt ready for the Poloshow. However, I've got the missing parts now or on the way so fingers crossed to get stage one complete before September.

I popped up to Barnsley over the weekend and did some more with the car.

Previously i was still missing the rear window seal as the last owner had cut it when taking the window out.

VW heritage initially said over £90 but they dropped this to £41 so it became £just over £50 delivered special order form Classic in Germany - its a new old part.

Anyway getting the rear window in has made it possible to bring the car out of the garage so I could see what a bad job I've made of the near side - it was closer to the wall and by not really having the weather or space I've got to go over that side in full, I'm going to re do the bonnet anyway. The rest of the car just needs a good polish. The paint has lacquer but really needs a lot more of a finish on it yet with the polisher.

I also got some roof gutter trims form one of the lads on here and picked them up at the polo show. They are from a mk3 coupe as all the mk2 ones seem to break when they come off.

They really do finish off the roof line visually.

Also, again from on here I managed to get the full saloon rear seat belt set and a boot seal rubber.

Its getting all these missing little parts that is stopping it going on the road. Part of the fun of the project i guess though.

It now transpires I've no washer bottle, washer motor or horn, so I've started to hunt some of those bits. Worst of all though I'm missing the rear sear belt bolts and you cant just use any bolts for that.

Car is out of the garage now and it certainly has come a long way - I spent most of Sunday afternoon on wiring things up. All the lights work and indicators and brakes. I just need a couple of rear numberplate bulbs as neither work. Battery was flat by the end .

Here is a few shots of how it looks now - seems so close to being on the road - stage 1!

Still got lots of fettling to do and things like the bumpers need painting etc.

And this car has been in the club before as there are two club polo stickers on it - although one has only two letter remaining!

Just read this thread from the beginning and i am loving it, I have got my self a mk2 soon 1.3 bought it back in march and i know what the slow progress feels like but when you get certain parts of it finished the feeling is amazing!

Keep up the good work hopefully i will see this in the flesh one day!

Great work, same colour as mine.

Me and the bf always call it 'Arab Gold'.

Bodywork wise mine isn't the best but great fun. Not sure what I'll do with it when my Derby is done..maybe restore it maybe track it. Berg cup arches etc.

Well I've missed the season due to some missing trims and stuff.

Also I have some shrinkage/sinkage on the side of the car that was closer to the wall in the garage so have started to rub down to re do those areas.

Stuff I'm missing now is

Washer bottle and pump

Some parts of the drivers side locking mechanism - basically if you push the pin it doesnt do anything to the lock as its not connected.

Mucked around with the wheels which are nearly all refurbished as much as I'm going to do. Just need to decide on tyre sizes.

Its deceiving as with the car jacked up on the slope the wheel is too low but i dont think i want 175/50/13 as they are too small in width and also circumference.

I'm going to have to give it some thought as i like the way the temporary wheels fill the arches (14's not 13's) but done want ridiculous amounts of rubber.

I have some other goodies for the car at home but T&T and insurance are first!

Basically after re-painting the bonnet and one side I'm still no happy with the finish and we think we should have used cellulose not 1k acrylic, didnt realise we could have got some - badly advised by the paint shop. Couldnt use 2k due to the location and facilities.

However, it will more than do.

I've sourced all the small parts for the basic driving and MOT elements and once its past mot and taxed ill be starting on the interior.

So stage one - on the road is coming very close and the intention is to move ot the more powerful engine in late spring.

Its going for the MOT at the end of the month so fingers crossed;)

Once its on the road (insurance quoted me only £180 fully comp for me and my father in law, thats with the h&R cup kit, alloys and the poweflow exhaust i have in the garage) ill plan the journey down from Barnsley.

I hope to have some pictures soon of it on the road. - only taken 20 months

Ohh yeah - before the bad weather, i painted the bumpers and trim in proper bumper paint. looks a lot better.

Just one question - the 8p gearbox feels sort of "loose" and sounds a bit. well just sounds a bit .

Is this normal for an 8p or even an old gearbox that has been in storage for several years after 107k miles?

Engine wise, I'm probably a bit optimistic about late spring as funds wont allow me to do it all in one go.

Basically I've a afh, cbr600 carbs etc my mate has an old standalone ecu that is simple but I'm going to use for timing. So nothing too unusual but it will hopefully be fun.

I think i was expecting too much of a show car finish given it was painted in the garage in the pictures and this was my first time.

However, it was mainly the fact I left 1k acrylic lacquer for 3 weeks before polishing. The DA and using G3 barely touched it so it hasnt got a smooth finish to the lacquer.

I guess it will take quite a lot of time and probably safer by hand to get it where I would like. (by hand as me+DA+G3(or evenG9/10) is a heavy handed combination) I'm likely to burn through as I've so much to polish,

Its probably a few weekends of polishing.

We have half joked that we will re-do it in the summer in cellulose in a weekend!

I've only recently got mine and progress is slow but I'm in no rush to get it ready my aim is for edition next year but who knows

Na man I don't agree, how many coats of lacquer are on there?

Get your self a hard flatting block and some 1500, and sand any mottle/imperfections out, then buy a lambs wool mop head to polish it up, but be warned its very aggressive, but exactly what you need! Then move onto some G6 with a suitable mop head.

Opinion may vary on the 1500 and lambs wool, but I'd feel comfortable doing.

Stick to the flat parts of panels first to reduce the chance of cutting through

Well it passed the MOT today first time - flying colours.

The brakes were a bit scary according to my father in law who took it today, but I think that it just needs some use, as he said they got better.

He did 30 miles and said they improved a lot.

Getting very excited for the drive down south on Saturday.

However, the front wheels are rubbing under breaking - not much but enough.

Going to trim back the underside of the trim and also turn up the metal lips at the weekend to give a little more clearance, but the new wheels are a little wider, but 5mm more arch gap, so it might be an issue, have to see.

Ill take some shots of the road trip - 160 miles its first real outing and we know nothing of the engines history etc just what I've done.
