Ill call tomorrow and see what the local ones have.

It passed, which has been a long awaited goal. I'm not sure how much of the tidying up ill have done, so it will be a bit messy still but it will be at polo social which has been the target.

  • Ok, tomorrow its booked in for its MOT. Its not been on the road for two years and that was with the standard engine etc. I know its not a revolutionary engine upgrade and bike carbs are commonplace

Well, time for an update on this.   In July 2018 JC contacted me asking if I wanted to buy this saloon. I was hesitant at first just because I know how much work JC has put into this car and

Probably not on the shelf, no.

There's a few variations, for different versions of the caliper, depending what they came off, but for For VW2's, you should need one per side of:

allen key head bolt
M8X45 /

allen key head bolt
M8X55 /
Guide price on vagcat is in the pennies range.

Thanks mate. I'm guessing I'm being told not to drive the polo?

The ones I have are not allen key bolts, they are normal bolts.

The alen key ones are in the tube like bits. These are what holds the caliper to the hub i think.

yeah the allen key ones are the ones that hold the caliper to the carrier and they are the ones that come in the 2 size and are different between VW1 and VW11. The 15mm bolts are what hold the carrier to the strut. these are the same for either.

A VW dealer should be able to get all parts in for next day.

Item 3 is the bolts that secure the carrier to the strut - (N 90068902) they are M10x30mm

Item 5 is the allen key bolts that hold the calliper to the carrier.

on VW1 brakes the are both (N 0147153) M8X45 and used a 35mm guide sleeve (171615221A)

or VW11 brake the top one is (N 0447553)which is M8X55mm and uses part 4 (171615221) 45mm guide sleeves

Bottom is (N 0147153) M8X45 and used a 35mm guide sleeve (171615221A)

OK, I think i mislead you all originally (but I really appreciate the support).

I have the Allen key ones in the VW11's - they seem original and haven't been out - one seems a bit rounded off but felt so so tight before I couldn't tighten it any more - so ill try to replace shortly.

The bolt I was missing was the carrier to the strut one - two 15mm (from what Mark said) bolts. I was missing (recently lost) the lower of these so the whole assembly seemed to move about a bit and rattle.

I used the bolt that used to hold the previous VW1 assembly in and all seemed tight, so was a little concerned as I think its ok. (sort of)

Ok, sorry for terrible picture and even worse writing, but this is what was missing. (anti rattle clips going on in the morning)

I have no lids on the hex bolt ones. I thought there should be.

yep the one you are missing is (N 90068902) they are M10x30mm I would personally also order a set of the allen key bolts as well as once they round you can't get them off. Speak to them nicely and say its really urgent and they can get them in next day.

None of the bolts have covers but you can fit in some covers for the allen key ones. I've used BM ones.

Thanks Mark and Steve - top info as always,

Was getting worried it was unsafe to drive for a moment until I realised I had said the wrong thing.

Yeah, the hex bolts need replacing as although - lets say well past finger tight, will need socket set to undo, didnt feel good.

There's a rebuild kit on the same page of the screen as the side bolts. Order a couple of those as well. It has the rubbers slide bushes and nylon sleeves in. Then you can cut the rubbers back and use mole grips to get the bolts out if they're not playing. Think they're 8 quid something a side.

Glad it will make it to the polo show :) top marks.

you'll eventully iron the creases out and reach trouble free motoring :)

Had you got another carrier bolt? If not, text me your address and I will bang one in the post.

Thanks Steve, I think i have another spare from my VW1's, which ill make sure is in the car in case of issue.

Or do you mean the hex bolts - as id appreciate one of those.

Mario - the car looks worse than when it made it to polo show before, still incomplete carpets and the paint is looking flat. However, the engine and brakes are way better.

IT seems to take me forever to get some time on the car. Others seem to build beautiful cars from a nut and bolt resto in a matter of weeks!

When trying to get the caliper bolts off, if they're as rounded as mine were on the Golf (VWII's) then the only way I managed to get them off was by welding the appropriate bit into the bolt and only then would it come free. Tried grips and drilling, and hammering a bigger bit etc to no avail.

I don't think I've got any slide bolts (Allen key ones) I just order new and throw the old ones normally. I'll have a rummage tonight though, drop me your address again and I'll see what you can find.

Yep, know what you mean about slow moving projects, I've got a few myself.

Thing is, most people on here haven't got the kids, house, career stuff going off.

I'm missing most of the show this year as I'm working til late Friday, then I think I've got to move premises on the weekend.

I might have got confused, but don't drive it with any of the bolts missing in the brakes as the calliper could come off. I'm pretty sure I have some bolts but I can't get to a post office so can bring them to Polo Social. But it would be quicker to call your VW dealer and get them ordered in as you should be able to pick them up tomorrow. Or speak to VW Heritage and see if they will do a rapid delivery for you. Most things can be done next day.

I picked the slide bolts for the VWll last week from TPS 90p ea they had loads in stock

I got mine from GSF for 95p. Another option if you have a branch near you.

Guys thanks for all the support.

I have no bolts missing.

I did sub in a vw1 bolt to bolt the carrier to the strut as that is what must have fallen.out.

One of the hex bolts is rounded and tight enough but I want to replace.

I'm going to test drive tonight and see how the brakes are.

I would have liked more Road time before polo social but just going to.make sure all safe.

Cheers

I'm in the same boat to be honest. If I don't get my discs, pads and shoes changed tomorrow I will be on some pretty dodgy brakes for the drive up and back!

flat paint? ill bring my polisher :p haha

brakes arent anything to be taken lightly. get them them working well before you drive anywhere, as youve experienced, this forum is buldging with advice and support

I'm in the same boat to be honest. If I don't get my discs, pads and shoes changed tomorrow I will be on some pretty dodgy brakes for the drive up and back!

I've had brake fail once in my life, and all the training I've had is by the by, I was funking lucky, if anything had happened differently, I and probably whoever I hit, would have been in hospital at the very least. Don't risk it.

To be honest, it's not even running in a way that could handle a motorway right now. The discs and pads aren't actually that bad, but they squeal on braking and/or turning. They still do their job. I'll be doing my utmost tomorrow to get the discs and pads changed now that I definitely have the right parts, and I'm also hoping that better quality leads will at least cure my misfiring enough to make the car driveable. If not I'll be missing the social. :sorry:

So with much thanks with all the support on club polo, this is where i got to at 8.45pm on Wednesday.

This is as clean as she will get I'm afraid.

I'm off to the social Thursday afternoon.

The new discs and pads drove great.

The replacing missing bolt and more probably the lack of a warped disc removed the terrible rattle and judder at speed.

I hate it when yo dont get all the jobs done before loosing the light.

Only problem is, the exhaust is now on the floor.

So decided this i the next stage of the project....

I've been told hundreds of times that the brakes are good enough and you get used to them, but I'm going to have a bash at getting this to work. Probably not a great servo set up, but anything more would be helpful.

I know its not giving more brakes but just changes feel, but I'm driving some fast modern cars all the rest of the time and what always catches me out is the contrast.
