Cool beans , what sets would give a very noticeable difference to breaking ,?

Why would you want to waste the money on buying them new?

I refurbed mine myself, as good as new and a fraction of the cost?

What brakes have you gone for dude ? And they made much difference ?

if you want to fit 256mm discs then you need carriers from an 80s audi. Or some vauxhall ones can be modified to fit - do a search there's plenty of info about them on here.

To be honest though I can't see why you;'d need anything more than 239mm, vented discs with a 55bhp Coupe S. Just swap for VWII calipers so you can use vented discs which are less prone to brake fade. Then decent pads (Ferodo DS2000/DS2500 are good), OEM Brembo discs from GSF, some new dot4/4.1 fluid. Don't forget the rear drums, if these are in bad shape then it'll affect all the brakes. Strip them down, replace shoes and drums if they are worn, clean everything up, grease moving parts (not friction surfaces obviously!) and re-assemble and adjust the handbrake.

Certainly. I would say you only need 256mm brakes if your pushing 130bhp and use it on the track or drive like a bell end.

Otherwise vw1 or vw11 calipers with DS2000 pads and OEM disks are fine, as long as the rear drums are in good shape!

cool cool . just bigger discs look nicer under the wheels , with nicer looking calipers ,. sometimes aesthetics come into doing a car up too , surely i dont want to choose this over functionality . as well as its gonna have gt cam and bike carbs on with full exhaust system so not gonna just be a 55bhp coupe S .

tbh, VW1's do the job very well with the right disc, pad and fluid option. never had any problems on track or spirited road driving.

1 thing you need to remember is the mk2 has no servo assist.

The VW11 calipers, which are just wider than the ones your running at the moment let you fit vented disks, you won't actually get any better braking power as the foot print of the pad is the same size, they do look alot better though with them being bigger and flat.

I'd go for them personally, can be picked up for penuts!

vented discs will always be better, much better for heat dissipation. Since VWII calipers can be had for either next to nothing or literally nothing and fit right on the standard carriers it seems a no brainer to me. It made the brakes on the Polo GT I used to have much less prone to fade (although Cymru is right, decent discs and pads will have even more effect).

I know people who do track days with 170+bhp g40s with 239mm vented discs, they're not a problem for anything you're going to get from a tuned Coupe S :) The audi carriers and calipers required for a 256mm upgrade aren't easy to find or cheap. The vauxhall stuff is cheaper and easy to find but I believe not a direct fit without some modification (there is an FAQ thread somewhere).

VWII are fine on mine and I've hammered that round tracks. I use DS2500 pads, Std Brembo discs or Brembo MAX's and braided lines. Also very important is good brake fluid!! I use either Motul RBF600 or Castrol React Performance Dot 4. If you put a decent set up on and then skimp on the brake fluid then its pointless!

the vauxhall conversion is an easy one to do, i'm running calibra calipers and 256mm discs on my loon, i don't like them though, purely because i can't find any wheels i like in 14's  to do the conversion properly though you need to make up a spacer to pull the MC away from the bulk head, don't hammer at the metal work till it fits like i did!

I have 256mm brakes with VWII's on my 100hp 6n2 and I drive hard occasionally, and my car is much heavier putting much more strain on the brakes and it doesn't fade at all. 256's would be OTT not to mention increase unsprung weight which makes the car less responsive.

My suggestion VWII's with vented 239mm discs (grooved and dimpled if you are a tart) with some lightweight 13's and decent tyres.

i have 14's on at the minute which I'm happy with , will look into VWII calipers though , thanks people

If you wanna be posh, Wilwood 4-pot alloy calipers look great for the money, and they do a kit for the MK1 Golf which fits MK2 Polo afaik.

£525.60 for the mk1 kit brand new ! shapow , although the mk2 golf kit is like £80 cheaper , shame they wouldnt fit as well ,,

for the mk1 golf kit would they just be a direct fit with no messing ?

and yes they do look very posh indeed mikey !!!! :-o :-o 8-) 8-)  :-o8-):-o8-)

I'm going to be running the vw11 calipers on my 130bhp valvered bready, and from the research I've done it will be more than capable with vented discs and decent pads, and whilst using the vw1 carriers they should clear my 13's... one question i do have is my bready is early (82) obv has no servo.. but will the master cylinder be ok with the setup, or is it worth upgrading that too, if so to what?

think you would need 14" wheels depending on the size of the discs used l

so for example if i chose those wilwood brakes . would i need to do anything else other than slap them on the car ? and would i get a noticable gain from then being on the car over mine now ?>

VWII from a mk1/mk2 golf are 239mm and will fit fine under 13inch wheels

well I have Wilwood Midilites on my g40. They are pretty much a straight fit but not quite.

- the brackets foul the strut slightly, you need to file/grind a bit of metal off the strut.

- your brake hoses wont fit, you'll need longer ones and also the fittings for the wilwoods are imperial not metric

- the calipers are lightweight but huge, I have to run spacers on mine to fit 14" or 15" wheels on.

In my opinion they are hugely overkill for a Coupe S and I don't think it's worth spending the £500+ it'll cost you just to look "nice"!

had them on for years now, they are very good for track days, never had any fade.

They are beasts!

Just get a pait of VW11's and they will be fine jason!
