xenon lights vs hids?

Featured Replies

Well I've had 2 sets of HID's, one set on a 6n and the other on my current mk3 but both sets have broken at some point so i was wondering if people have used just xenon bulbs instead and what they are like?

Also is there a certain type, i know they are h4.

Cheers

I really wouldn't bother.

We get many customers that have shelled out upto £30 for "xenon bulbs", alot of these bulbs are cheap tat that run at ridiculously high wattage. We've had several cars with burnt wiring and melted bulb holders.

If you do go for "xenon bulbs" make sure you get them from a reputable company.

Or for £65 you can have a xenon hid kit with 2 years warranty delivered to your door?

I know which I'd be going for...

aftermarket HID's will be fully illegal for MOTs from december. xenons wouldn't be sold if they were dangerous just buy some well known brand ones, like ring or osram.

Not all aftermarket HID kits are illegal, you can get type approved ones, the exact source of light from the bulb needs to be directly equivalent to that of the bulb it replaces, so there's no need to change the headlamp assembly. There are other things to think about such as headlamp cleaning and self-levelling - if you haven't got them then the MOT will still be a problem.

Xenons can be illegal if you fit a wattage higher than the headlamp was made for. Putting 100/90 watt in a headlamp designed for 65/55 watt will give more light but also as already said, it can cause wiring, relays and connectors to overheat and fail.

As leon said about HID's i didn't want to risk it so i bought upgraded bulbs and i think although they are not as bright as HID's they make a massive difference and have that cool blue/white look.

Scroll down to the bottom of my build thread mate some pics on there:

As far as I know...

Xenon's and HID's are the same thing.

'Xenon bulbs' are normal bulbs that have xenon gas in them for the sole reason of marketing them as 'Xenon'. The xenon gas doesn't make a difference. They may be white or blue or super bright, but that's nothing to do with the xenon gas, it's just a con.

Real HID's and Xenon's don't use normal bulbs, they don't have a filament, and the high current causes an arc in the xenon gas.
