1998 Polo 1.4 Steering Column failure

Featured Replies

Hi

Newbie here. We have above car and steering column has 'dropped' from dash at top mounting. I have removed all possible panels and its not the 'snap'head' bolts that hold the column bracket to the dash bar - looks more like the adjuster mechanism has sheared from the bracket.

a) does anyone know how to remove the steering wheel (air-bag model) - looks like 2x Allen bolts to get cover off but is it going to go off if I remove

b) how the heck to you get the steering column out as it seems there is a secondary bracket (part of the pedal box assy?) 2/3rds the way down

Then finally there seems just to be the pinch bolt for the connection to the rack

Any advice appreciated

For the airbag: unplug the battery, leave it for a bit so all capacitors drain (just incase) then undo the two allen key bolts on the back of the steering wheel and remove the airbag...then disconnect the yellow plug to the airbag :)

The other's I don't know, good luck though bud!

Thanks Dave

Big help - thought it needed some caution!
