Saw this and have seen them with G40 lumps in them in the past and thought it would make an interesting project. If i had some money and space :-)

yeah later trabants (after the berlin wall came down) came with polo engines so it's apparently quite an easy conversion. Having said that I'm not sure I'd want to drive something with that much power which is partially made from compressed cardboard!

I drove an old trabant around berlin last year but with one of their old 2 cylinder, 600cc, 2-stroke engines which are something like 25bhp. And that was enough for one of them!

the fuel gauge made me laugh, it's just a plastic dip stick. You open the fuel tank which is safely located right above the engine (!) and then dip the stick in to see how much fuel is left :)

Good fun to drive though!

I can't imagine they'd made much of a track car really either, the chassis is medieval horse & cart technology! And I can't imagine the cardboard body has much in the way of rigidity. Would be funny to space-frame one of the shells though.

I didn't imagine it would be made out of much or really, based on its origin. I also did think it would be a good base for a track car. Just think it would look good tonking past something which looks more race bred. I know nothing about these cars except from an old thread that was on here with people talking about them and then some pics of one with a G40 in it. Be scary as fook i am sure.

It's basically a sightseeing tour in Berlin called trabant safari. The tour guide bloke drives the first car and then everyone else drives in a convoy behind. Each car has a cb radio thing in and he tells you what you are going past etc.... Much better way of seeing the sights than sitting on a tour bus.
