Dave's 16v Open Air - Scrapped

Featured Replies

So this little beauty popped up locally on ebay and I had to have it...fortunately the bids did not meet the reserve price so I messaged the guy and arranged to view the car!

So it's a 1999 1.4 16v Open Air, After seeing it and deciding what to do I agreed to buy it! Went and picked it up this evening for £600 wink.gif Does need a bit of attention and work to it, hence 'project' but think it will be a good investment!

Few Pictures I managed to take before it tipped it down!

Both Polo's on the drive heh

Like said, needs a bit of work.

It's currently mis-firing very slightly, think the coilpack is to blame for this though!
Driver's side window goes up very slowly
Left lock doesn't work
Clutch is quite heavy - might need a replacement at somepoint!
Bits of rust around the car, worst is the driver's door! Also has lacquer peel on the bonnet
Also might need new wheel bearings

Apart from that! It's all good lol

Will get more pictures up tomorrow, the main thing is getting it mechanically sound before I can start modding it properly...
Also need to get my 1.0l sold quickly! Anyone wanna buy it? lol

What happened to a 6n2?

Looks good though, are you taking the coillies off your 1.0 to put on this or buying another set?

Dude this came up locally for cheap haha, always wanted one so snatched it up!

Oh yeah it's open air too!

And Yeah mate, for now, though my rear ones are a bit fooked, so might sell them on and buy a set of JT Coilies that allow me to go lower :)

The power already from it is immense! Can't wait to get it running properly lol

Open air is cool :)

One of my rear collies is dead too, I need a new set!

Let me know what it's like compared to a 1.0, i'm sick of mine haha

Yeah my rears are shagged aha

And dude, even though it's slightly misfiring....holy shit!

Couldn't believe how much power difference it had lol, got wheelspin in top end of second gear earlier! (was wet mind)...it just pulls so much lol

Right, my 1L is completely back to standard and up for sale, also as it's payday now means I can start work on the 16v :)

Have booked it into the garage on tuesday to determine mis-fire and give it a service. I have also cleaned the whole interior and transfered some things across!

Will get proper pictures up tomorrow and progress during the week!

Right so Sold the 1L back on tuesday :( her new home is literally across the road from me  not even a cars length away aha.

Took the 16v in for a full service the same day!

Got her back the other day and all's well, though need to get brakes done as the disc pads are very low, discs are old and rear brake cylinders are leaking!

So... popping down to GSF on monday and buying new rear drums, cylinders, drum shoe kit, bearings, brake fluid, discs, pads and a tin of grease lol, along with new top mounts and bearings as might aswell chuck the coilies on at the same time! - Will be a tad expensive but might aswell do the lot!

Also need to get 2 new window regulators! A guy off here has offered me a driver's one though I'm awaiting money owed before I can buy it :@ (brakes come first!) Contemplating whether it's worth getting 2 new doors due to rust :/ Driver's door is worst on the outside, Passenger's worst on the part by the hinges :(

Anyway! Gave the 16v her first clean in what looks like a year :/ inside and out! Also cleared mud, twigs and leaves from the scuttle panel and started on wiring in my old speakers etc and headunit! Also bought a replacement driver's side glovebox and fitted that along with the old lock!

Enough talking, here's some pictures from after cleaning it today:

(Sorry for bad quality pics, camera died so phone camera it was!)

Some rust/lacquer peel

And lacquer peel on the bonnet!

Apart from that! It's all good!

Big step up from driving the 1.0L around, keep checking my speed as i'm often going over it atm, still can't believe the power difference!

Hopefully will get the brakes and coilovers done this week, then can move onto exterior :)

Future plans are to put my 6n2 rear's back on, possibly debadged grille with 16v logo, debadge the boot, get remote central locking and total closure, big lows, refurb and put the BBS'/alternate wheel choice on and smooth off some things :)

Comments Welcome!

My bonnet looks just like yours, and my roof is peeling too!

Just need a whole respray tbh haha

Haha yep!

The more I went around the car the more I thought "i'm gonna need a full respray." - but i'm cheap so it's probably gonna be done in sections lol.

You still thinking of selling yours mate?

When I get a proper paying job so I can afford something new then yeah :D

  • Author

Haha fair enough!

Still looking into the Golfs?

Also just been roughly adding up totals for tomorrow's trip to GSF....looks like it's gonna be an expensive one lol.

  • Author

It wasn't as bad as I expected, still a bleddy expensive one.

sounds like your planning to do exactly what i have done to my 16v open air. i love the open air roof every possible chance i have to open it i will even if it is cold haha

  • Author

Haha Yeah mate, had it just over a week and love it! Both my window regs are a bit buggered atm so the roof is constantly open, not complaining though, it's actually awesome!

I just want to be able to afford to do all of the body/paint work already! Also driving it around at standard height depresses me haha, will be going low again soon :)

Small Update;

Managed to get the front discs and pads changed today

Was quite shocked at the condition of the old ones :/

Took some pictures whilst stopping for a cuppa 8-)

Compared to new, This was the good side!

Also one of the slider pins on the callipers had rusted and seized, so stripped the callipers down, cleaned and re-greased them!

Also had to drill the screws on both sides for the brake discs as these were so rusted they snapped >.<

Overall the brakes are much firmer and more responsive which is good, no wonder why they felt so bad after the condition they were in!

On to doing the drums tomorrow which shall be interesting, then gotta tax the car friday :/ funtimes!

Finally got the new rear drums, cylinders, shoes and bearings done! However being a tit completely forgot to transfer over the abs sensor rings!

Broke atm, just got enough for petrol to hopefully last me a week and a half until I get paid! Then can finally afford new top mounts, the tracking and extra money on insurance to go low :) After that need to source two window regulators (hopefully already sourced one) and possibly in near future two new doors due to rust :(

Will update next with lows and some other small bits I have planned :)

Nice one mate. Will have to look out for you waving through the drop top now ;)

Haha yes mate! It should be getting lowered in next week or two so shouldn't be too hard to spot ;) Sorta miss the red mind, however not how much it faded lol

Don't think it's achieving its full power atm mind, also the idle can get a bit funny at times and drop down or stutter :S

Noticed what looks like a crack in the exhaust manifold though not sure if this is standard? (if anyone knows that would be great, towards the right side)

Also need to take the throttle body off to give it a clean as it's bleddy filthy.. could solve the idle problem I hope!

Sweet, Ill keep a look out. Yeah throttle body will make a huge difference. Just use carb cleaner. If not i have all the VAGCOM stuff so could pop round and plug it in if that doesn't work. I lost the program of my old laptop but should have it back up and running soon. Let me know if you get stuck mate.

Yeah man :) Yeah I need to buy some this week, will get it done soon hopefully! haha and really? Yeah please man I've been asking around for anyone with vagcom for a couple of days now! lol, Will try cleaning the tb and if that doesn't work will give you a buzz! Cheers mate :)

Mine was the same but to the point of stalling when coming to a stop (I brought it like as a knew It was a problem and got it cheap)

It’s a common problem with mk4 throttle bodies because of the breather pipe gets the throttle bodies all dirty. Use carb cleaner also there is a link I try and find the link that tells how to clean it if you take it off. Also I heard unplugging it you need it reset.

Also check the breather pipe isn’t clogged up, stuck together or split

  • Author

Ah right yeah cheers mate!

Yeah it's covered in oil :/ gonna take the whole thing apart and have a look at it when I pick up some carb cleaner! Thanks for the advice bud! Will search for that link if you can't find it :)

  • Author

Ahh cheers mate! Do I have to use vagcom to reset the TB then? is it vital? I've been told to just let it idle for a bit, then go for a drive without ragging it for 10 or so miles to let the ecu re-learn it's positions (after the battery has been disconnected for a while that is)

When I did my car i disconnect the battery to remove the throttle body to clean it and change the starter motor then put it all back and it's been fine. I did want the guide suggest and left the battery disconnected for 3 hours.

If you are worried see if you can leave it connected while clearning

The only problem I found is that the previous owner installed an alarm but half removed it and never gave me a fob to turn it off. so when i put it all back it messed up the immobiliser.
