When I did my car i disconnect the battery to remove the throttle body to clean it and change the starter motor then put it all back and it's been fine. I did want the guide suggest and left the battery disconnected for 3 hours.

If you are worried see if you can leave it connected while clearning

The only problem I found is that the previous owner installed an alarm but half removed it and never gave me a fob to turn it off. so when i put it all back it messed up the immobiliser.

I'll disconnect it tomorrow morning then! Thanks again for the link mate! Will give it a good cleaning lol

And same haha though all the wiring is still in place, yet removed the actual alarm and guessing they disconnected it from the battery!

They removed the siren but left the control box and gave me no fob so it rearmed it self and i couldn't turn it off. the indicators just kept flashing and the car wouldn't start

Right, set about sorting the tb today

Under the throttle body looked like this:

Is that an air flow sensor of sorts? is it meant to look like that? almost looks like the plastic has blown out at the back :S

Throttle body was quite filthy, still giving everything a good clean atm so will upload other pictures and results when done!

Look very dirty

The pipe with what looks like gasket is the EGR (Exhaust gas recirculation) pipe and the hole at the back of the intake in the vacuum control valve.

Not too sure what the black stuff is could be dirty mayo oil. Don’t be alarmed if it is does mean you head gasket gone.

My 1.4 8v breather pipe was blocked up with mayo oil it’s because if the car is only used for short journey the oil doesn’t get up to temp and condensation in the engine turns the oil to mayo.

Give it a good clean have a look at the vacuum control see if it’s dirty and check pipes for splits.

So with some help today, got the inlet manifold off and took it to bits! Found what I thought was parts of the plastic pipe (turned out to be metal pipe) in the bottom of the manifold so they have now been removed and I have thoroughly cleaned out the manifold!

All back together now and started first time but with quite a high idle (guessing due to tb and the carb cleaner lol)

However always one problem after another, now it's misfiring..however it only seemed to be when it got to temperature, so i'm guessing and hoping it's the coilpack. Also noticed a bit of steam coming up from the rad when the torch shone through it, which might look like it's got a small hole in it >.<

Right, update time!

So last wednesday was my birthday and got some treats for my car! Spent most of the day rebuilding and fitting the coilovers before getting it re-tracked and such.

The coilovers were quite caked in dirt, so I cleaned them up and finally copper greased the threads! New bearings and top mounts were added to the front suspension so they should be alright for a while now! I'm gonna look into getting some coilover sleeves in the next coming weeks mind to prevent them from getting overly caked in crap!

Also I wanted to see what the badgeless grille looked like with the 16v badge, so stuck that on and took some pictures on my brother's camera

The front needs to come down a bit more and need to drop the back down another 20mm or so!

Heading to VW tomorrow to pick up some new plates and such... Also I've replaced the aerial seal, cleaned the interior up more and swapped the open air and window switch around so that passengers will stop pressing the open air button instead of the open window button!

I now want to see to the rust and body work and get my BBS' back on...Also will be putting my 6n2 rears back on sometime this week :)

And yeah it's a called Fly Eyes Kit - It's like a sticker that you apply over the headlights/lights and then once your happy with it/to stick down, heat it up using a hairdryer. This bonds it and makes it able to stretch. If you mess up just re-heat it and pull it back off and stretch it out and stick back down bud!

Only thing is, is that it makes the headlights very dull, so it would be worth uprating the standard bulbs!

I have no idea haha, had to yank on the loom behind to be able to connect it all properly mind!

And oh yeahh, I just removed the bits of metal from the inlet manifold, broke off any other parts that were weak on the pipe and cleaned it out, then threw it all back together as I couldn't be bothered to blank it off! lol

Idle is still dropping some times though...i've been told it could be my idle control valve/throttle body :/

I've also fitted new plates and plateholders from my local vw today, will get some pictures up tomorrow/when it's not raining too much lol

Small update!

My old numberplates had been on the car since new, so I decided to get a new set to freshen it up a little!

Popped down to VW the other day and £10 later returned with new plates, new plate surrounds, sticky pads and a handful of screws!

Got around to fitting them today:

I think that this tidies the front and rear up a bit, the mould on the old front plate had annoyed me since day 1!

I also fitted a new hose going from the inlet manifold to the coolant temp sensor (I think) as my old one had split and collapsed in places!

Had to take the airbox off to get enough room to push the new hose on, so whilst that was off I decided to give the engine bay a quick going over with a cloth! The previous owner and travelled over what seems to have been an extremely muddy field and managed to get mud absolutely everywhere! So now it's looking a bit better :)

Still haven't got around to fitting the 6n2 rears yet or lowering the car a bit more...hopefully will have some spare time this week!

Also sorry about crappy quality pictures, need to get a decent camera instead of using my phone!

Another little update:

Fitted my old 6n2 rears yesterday (not like everyone else has )

Note my old polo in the background behind the silver skoda! Didn't have to go far! lol

Think I prefer these to the 16v lights, however can always change them over if I get bored!

Having some idle/fuel problems lately so payday will mean investigating into the problem!

Hopefully going to lower the the front by another 10mm tomorrow and the rear by 20mm

Ordering a new MAP/Thrust sensor and coolant temp sensor tomorrow so all should be running smoothly :)

So not much has happened lately, started Uni so have been quite busy!

The other day I finally got around to fitting the new coolant temperature sensor and doing a coolant change at the same time (with the help of the advice of some members off here)

The coolant temp sensor that was in there before wasn't a genuine one so that's now been replaced by a genuine VW one!

I went about replacing the coolant temp sensor in the first place as the car has been over-fuelling itself especially when cold!... after being vag-com'ed it showed no fault codes, so hopefully it would have either been the coolant temp sensor or maf sensor....replacing the temp sensor has made no difference..

Fortunately I have bought a new MAF sensor from VW, however I need to take the inlet manifold off to fit it which I hope to be doing next week :) Might end up replacing the vac hoses at the same time

When it's cold i'm getting either fuel/water out of the back of the exhaust? My exhaust is very corroded mind..

It stinks of petrol and jutters under any influence of the throttle...however is fine when up-to temperature!

/sigh..

oh and this is currently the only way into my car to unlock it

Both door locks are broken and i'm that skint I have to wait until next payday to get the replacement parts >.<

Next update should be more interesting, hopefully going to be getting some new parts end of this month and wheels finally sorted!

Bit of an update!

Refitted the undertray for winter/sort of protecting engine and exhaust, got the alternator belt changed at the same time as mine looks like it's been on there since factory and had started to squeal! (was heavily cracked) I've also had the handbrake cables tightened at the garage using their brake effeciency roller thing, so now it's 3 clicks to secure the car instead of 8 or 9!

Also i've finally got a replacement driver side window regulator fitted thanks to ScottC for finding one! so nice to be able to actually use the window! All I need to do now is sort a bolt out on the left regulator and that's both of them sorted.

Temperature seems to drop down when it wants, so a new thermostat and housing will be bought just after christmas from VW, also going to get some VAC hosing and gaskets for the inlet manifold so I can finally get around to fitting the new MAF sensor

Not really interesting but replaced the pollen filter and cleaned under the scuttle panel a bit.

And finally test fitted one of my BBS' that has a tyre on

Unsure to keep the 14"s or get 15"s instead?

Oh i've also bought some fog lights off of Stringer on here and something from Germany for the interior, so hopefully will update soon!

BBS's are gonna look smart as! Especially when you give it more lows. And the 6n2 rears tidy it up a hell of a lot. I like where this is going

Haha thanks man! This is the best condition one I have, haven't refurbed this one at all yet haha. I've used wet and dry to sand one down and will prep it soon, have taken photo's of the process so will upload them when done man :) and yeah I'm still toying with the idea of going to 15"s or not! :/

Cheers boyo! :-D Yeah will be given more lows when I get them on..I have a feeling I might need new coilovers though as I think my rear left strut is buggered! Yeah I much prefer the 6n2's on this polo, think they suit it more than my last one ;d

And thanks man, I want this to be a detailed 'build' thread, trying to get most of the parts I get from now on to be genuine parts too! Popping down to VW somepoint either this week or next week to get the VAC hoses and inlet manifold gaskets so will update then :)

Main plans for this car is to tidy it all up, get the engine running properly and everything mechanically sound, get a custom exhaust built up and a bmc sorted out, lower it more on my BBS' or some other wheels, put my fogs in and other things I have ordered, fit a GTI splitter and then sometime in the future get a full respray and sort the body work out :)

Also over christmas I think i'm gonna be stripping the interior out, resealing the floorpan and then insulating it..will also give the carpet a good valeting too!
