Has anyone else used Norton Ghost to clone a hard drive? I used it yesterday and it's so so slow! it took 7hrs 45mins to clone 60Gb There must be a faster way??

Yea with that spec compared to nowa days standards that would be right. But main thing its all backed up i usualy try to leave that on over night if you can.

I manually backup all my Doc's photo's etc to an external HDD, and the photo's to two DVD copies and a photo's only external HDD. The reason I was cloning it was, the original drive was fast running out of space and some of the installed programs I don't have the original CD's to reinstall.

I was just supprised how long it took, I have cloned a disk before, all be it a much smaller one using a DOS prompt, but I could'nt remember the prompt and the various switches??

7 hours and 60 gigabytes? Sounds like you were cloning that drive to the external USB drive connected to USB port? I am using very old computer as a cloning station for Parallel-ATA drives. It is only Pentium 4 with 512 MB of RAM. I cannot remember how long it takes to clone 500 gigabytes but I am pretty sure that it is not even close to that.

Hah, I can beat that. I have a computer that is 2MHz with 32 kB of RAM (might be 16 kB).

I think like most now i have everything on External.

System > programs thats its.

Anything else, music, software, movies, pictures all on a separate drive usb.

System fails I'm all ok, but new worry is i hope the external dont sod up.

Way I do it is a WD Passport 500Gb for important stuff that gets updated constantly/good to have on something you can carry around and a shite ton of DVD+Rs for media.

I played about with storing music on a NAS drive but it just wasn't as responsive as I wanted, admittedly it was a terrible home NAS with what must've been the slowest disk and network controller I've ever encountered, but the rest will end up on a 4Tb NAS when I move back to uni.

7 hours sounds about right for a drive copy, although I was dealing with 1.5TBs...

Acronis True Image is what you want. Very intelligent and speedy.

i'm typing this on a pentium 3 900 mhz! it's running ubuntu.. not too slow but it does crawl along sometimes!

anyway, I recently cloned a 250gb partition using Partition Wizard. It's free and pretty easy to use, I would fully recommend it. Used it in the past with no problems!
