This is what i've seen, going to look tomorrow.

Was going for only front forks suspension for the lightness, but this has a small rear setup but worried if it does make it heaver. I want light and speed frame.

better bikes out there tbh,would be ok if it had lockout on the rear suspension,but it doesnt

also hydraulic disc brakes are much better than cable without much extra weight

if you like it then go for it,your money and choice. aint the worse bike I've seen by far.just dont think its got much going for it for the price imo

i myself would spend that cash on a 2nd hand hardtail/full with lockout of much better quality,and with better gears,forks,ect,.or pay more and elsewhere for a better item

you could pick up second hand a £500 + bike with all the toys easy for less than the cost of this new one

^^ So true about used bikes. I no full well on my bikes things like the price of the front forks new are worth more then i could get for the whole bike now.

Ebay has so many bargins on bikes because people don't/wont courier them. It might take some time but something local will come up.

EDIT: I'm also a brand snob and wouldnt buy an apollo from halfords................................

Apollo is problly the worst made bike ever,there the sort of bikes your parents buy you for your first ever bike

if i was you id get yourself to a proper bike shop and not halfrauds as you could probly get a much better one for that sort of money

but if you do end up getting it dont let them build it because it wont last 2 minutes

but if i was going to go for a mountain bike for getting to work id go for a dawes road bike you can pick some up cheap aswell

I picked up a none suspension bike for a fiver and they are very, very light (even though this was a steel frame) way lighter than any suspension bike could ever hope to be.

If you want a commuter/do most things bike you should really be looking at a hybrid.

A good hybrid should be minimum £250-£300 and it will have fixings for things like rack and mudguards.

Rack's are good if you want to carry things without getting a sweaty back.

Mudguards are essential on a commuter, unless you want to turn up at work with a wet brown stripe up your arse.

A decent full suspension mountain bike will cost £900, and be too slow and heavy for road use. Plus the knobbly tyres will be slow and energy sapping. The Halfords bike you've linked, well to be blunt looks crap. I've not heard good feeback about Halfords bikes, unless you get a Boardman. I'd go to your local bike shop to get decent advice. Also see if your eligible for the bike to work scheme.

This is my commuter bike. Scott Sportster P5 2010 model, I've done 2400 miles on it in one year, and it's been pretty reliable. Even though it's a little heavy, its reasonably quick on road and light off road is not a problem. I've had it fully loaded with shopping, ridden it on all weathers and its been fine.

(although I plan to get a faster steel audax type bike later in the year, I'll still use the Scott for tank duties)

Also don't forget to budget for things like lock, lights, clothing.....

the claud butler cape wrath disc hardtail i bought a few years back is a different matter,light and agile both on and off road,the new shocks i bought for it enhanced it futher.

continental tyres arnt bad for the road,have the sport contacts on at the moment,but also have the travel contacts which are better in the autumn and winter months.

all down to what you feel comfortable with i guess.must say i would like a decent carbon road bike in the future

Seconded on conti tyres. again a wise purchase for a commuter, their puncture protection is really good. I use travel contacts, pretty good semi-slick tyre

My mate just offered me his Saracen xray 3 bike, but i believe thats a dirt bike for £70.

Hybrids i have been looking at but because i saw the apollo and had the dual suspension and looked pretty light i though't it would be ok, i can't go to a proper bike shop as Cycle King in south croydon got looted badly so thats out the window lol.

why dont you get a road bike if its just for going to work? can pick them up cheap on ebay and will be quicker and probably cheaper to maintain with not having suspension and disk brakes

on a bike of that price, you'd be better off without. it'll have no damping characteristics at all and weigh a tonne. Go for something rigid with 700c wheels.

You only need suspension if you're going off road.

You're much better off without it on road, the suspension boinging when you pedal means you lose a lot of energy that could have gone into forward motion. It adds extra weight

The dirtjump bike looks like it would be fun off road, but not very practical. It'll be really heavy and slow. You said you wanted something light and fast?

A decent basic bike will set you back £250-£300 minimum. That will get you a bottom of the range Ridgeback, Scott, Trek or any other good brand. To spend any less is being unrealistic, you'll get something that's cheap and will fail on you. Google "bike shaped object".

If your budget is £200, then you might want to look second hand. Or you could see if you can get an end of line bike from a bike shop? The next year models will be coming in soon so bike shops will be looking to clear stock. Also if you look around you might be able to find a place that recons old bikes and sells them cheap.

I strongly advise you to not build your own bike. I'm not doubting your mechanical abilities, but it's not simple case of

screwing things together. If you don't know what you're doing you could end up with something that's dangerous! For the hassle, I'd let the bike shop do it, they have the skills and correct tools.

yeah suspension is really unnecessary if you're using it on roads. i was able to buy and convert a road bike to single speed/fixed for not much more than 100 quid and that has been great for the last year.

if you really want suspension and live near farnham, we sell our ex-rental ghost mountain bikes for 200 quid, serviced regularly

I think at least if i have front suspension i will be ok can always get a saddle with the dampening if really need be.

I do plan to take the bike out elsewhere specially to my bros in sussex where its all fileds and hills etc.
