9n3 gti - honeycomb grill cutting

Featured Replies

I have just been looking on etka as I have ordered the wife the GTI honey combe grills for her TDI, but I wanted to see if the GTI had a front mounted intercooler as the honeycombes on the side pods are infilled and not open to allow air through, however looking on etka it appears it still has a side mount cooler? so how the hell does it get force fed cold air?

ahh just found this - http://tigerstyle.co.uk/phpBB3/viewtopic.p...=43&t=48330

and been looking, it appears the gti never actually had the huneycomb lower down, oh well looks like I will be busy cutting the holes out.

now just the question of to black the headlights or not... I'm guessing its easy enough to split them?

Check out eBay mate will be alot cheaper. Also theres a site that sells them but can't remember what it is. You can get 2 types, 1 has all holes closed and 1 has some holes cut out in the left grill. If it is a TDI you shouldn't need to cut the holes out.

ordered them off ebay now, when they arive ill get busy cutting the holes (all tdis have a side mount cooler btw so need the air to it)

Ah I see. Shouldn't take long with a drill and a demmel tho

has anyone else done this mod and cut their own holes? if so how did you do it? I have just spent 20mins or so trying to neatly grind one of them with the dremmel, Ill be hear till christmas if I carry on at this rate!!!!

drilled holes first then used a dremmel to neaten up

Yea the biggest hole you can then just a case of filing it back abit. I havnt done it though.

Or sand away at the back part until it goes right through not sure if that will work though

I have found a easier and neater way,

drill a hole in the middle and then using a sharp craft knoide cut to the curners, then score along the edges and fold down, this sill split the plastic along the score, then keep scoring for a neat finish, then its a quick touch up with the file.

I have the 57 plate GTI. I ordered the lower honey grills 3 weeks ago. Turned up last week. I managed to cut out 13 extra holes in the grill. Looks awesome. The plastic is quite sturdy.

Just FYI....the plastic air director thing clipped behind to guide the air to the IC WILL NOT clip to the new honey Comb grill (in most cases).....i would suggest using a posxy resin type hard setting type glue. Seemed to of worked great for me. Working well recently in temps of around 3 degrees outside. The resin says its good until about -20c so we will see.

Just thought id share my experience. :)
