I want to give the new variant a bit more puff so I was wondering what tuning options there are for the 1.6 AKL engine.

I'm also assuming it's the 75bhp version as well as I cant find a power output anywhere. Get told by a few different sites (Wikipedia being one) that the AKL is the 100bhp version though so I'm a bit confused!

Ah ok cool, take it there arent that many tuning options for it then.

Would think the only advantage it would have over the 1.4 75 is it has more torque.

So that means its a small block right?

Guesiing its not worth tuning really so when it goes pop might just replace it with a 16v one?

No, AKL is the tall block 1.6 8v found in some MK4 Golfs/Boras and i only know it as a 77kw (103bhp) high compression mpi engine..?

The Polo 6k/v did get a 75bhp 1.6 8v but that was the short block unit found in the 6n.

So i still believe AKL is the 100bhp model.

I miss read it, it showed up as 74 (Kw) which works out as 100bhp sorry

Ah well thats good then! Bit more poke than I thought it had. Thought it seemed to switch to different timing above 4K when you give it some welly becuase it suddenly goes a bit "snarly" as my workmate called it!

Seems to struggle a bit at higher speeds though, took it for a sprint down my local airfield runway (abeit a grass one) and it started struggling when it got to 90 so wondering if its got a shorter-ratio gearbox.

Is it better than the 75bhp version in terms of turbo / supercharger potential?

right done a basic service on it, just wondering what I can do to it in terms of tuning that would then be capable of withstanding fitting a supercharger off a Mini Cooper S (thinking something like an M45)?

Would bigger injectors from a 1.8T or a G60 fit?

As mikey said above, it's a high compression engine, thi not suited to 'charging. Read the many threads covering this topic and you will see 'charging an engine isn't as simple as sticking on a turbo

If you HAVE to tune it, simple filter, map and exhaust would probs be your beat bet, though how much you'd gain i couldnt say

will be fitting a free flowing stainless mid and rear box soon and been searching for a remap chip, but dont think it'll be worth the dollar...

I`ve found Jetex list an induction kit but dont know if it will fit as mine looks like it has a HUGE AFM at the leading end of the intake pipe.

Had a stainless mesh across the end between it and the air box. I also took a plastic pipe out of the inside of the airbox that had two angled fins in it, car seems to pull better at high revs now and its made it sound a bit meatier.

Was looking at getting an exhaust eventually, but only been able to find Superchips listing the Golf Mk3 1.6 100 which I am assuming is not the same engine!

And found something else too that I might be looking into as well but thats long term and pretty high cost as well!

yea my air mass flow meter thingy is at the end of the intake pipe and bolts onto the airbox. I welded a little mating plate together so i could run a silicone hose from the meter to my new filter.

could always drill the box a bit, only the front and wheel arch side tho, to get some slightly cooler air.

looking at chips- is it really worth 250 quid for a 6-8 bhp increase? could jus drive with a very empty tank, no spare wheel and no seats and still be a lot quicker...

I couldnt work out how to make an adaptor fot my filter - I`ve got the old one I had on my Fabia TSi still that i was tempted to use but I think the Jetex one comes with an adapter on it.

I dunno if its worth spending £250 for "just" 6bhp, but then if it optimises performance and there is an upgrade path (which I have found on I think) then I would do it.

my adpator is just a plate (with the 4 holes in to bolt the air meter onto) with a 3 inch hole, this plate was then welded to a 3 inch tube and then a silicone hose is clamped to the steel tube... bit of gasket sealant between the plate and meter... sorted

That sounds far more complicated than I have the skills for! Might bodge one up out of the spare air box from the diesel and my spare cone filter.

Right, next question- what on earth is the big black box and why does it have a pipe going into the throttle body and one that appears to come from the petrol tank?

It's the big can behind the screen wash bottle.

Can't see the picture?? but from your description and location it will be the carbon canister filter

Oh right. Do I need it or can I get rid of it somehow?

It will fail an MOT for not having a cat where one was fitted originally. (Opens can of worms)
