I need a momo steering wheel boss for my new wheel, but I dont know if I've got a small spline or bigger one?

Car is a mk2 '89 saloon.

Any help? lol

take the nut of the steering wheel and see whats behind it! the big spline is about 30mm in diameter- the small size is just bigger than the thread

big spline has a 24mm nut on it my 89 mk2 is big spline

Early mk2 is usually small and late is usually big. However I don't know when the crossover is.

Definately before 1989 though, so it'll be a large spline.

yeah it has a 24mm nut on it, I've taken it off, but i dont know the difference.

I'm guessing I need a large spline boss then?

My '85 no longer has it's original fork-type rack or original wheel, instead it has an '88 wheel and telescopic '88 rack - and this uses a 24mm nut. So you'd think i have swapped to the bigger spline (the day i bought the shell).

However, it previously did have the original rack and a solid plastic MK1 Golf van steering wheel. The Golf steering wheel fitted the late rack because i tried it, once rebuilt, for a laugh.

Conclusion - early wheel compatible with 24mm bolt column, so that's not a reliable indication.

I thought the large splines were merely small splines with collars on, which work as adaptors? If so, you'll be able to see if your spline has a collar on it just by removing the horn push cover and looking at it.

Many VW's of the time had collars. I know how much of a thief they are to remove, since chewing one off the column of a mates VR6.

Yeah it is just a collar mikey so can be removed or fitted to make any column big or small spline

I'm sure someone on here converted a big spline to a little one by using a gear puller to pull the "collar" off?

Either way, If I took a picture of it when It when I get back from work, would anyone be able to tell me for sure if its a big spline or small spline? I'm pretty certain its big, but as I've said, I haven't seen one before at all so wouldnt really know.
